Photo of the Head Schoolhouse: it used to be a one classroom school for kids of all ages. Today it is the main building of our museum with archives, offices, and the gift shop.

Let's look back on the Ontario Carriage Works on Perry St. Before cars, this was the mechanics shop! Horse drawn carriages and buggies were the norm for travelling in the late 1800s. This building was originally constructed in 1884, and is now the home of Old Flame Brewing Co.

Anyone want a nap? This bed sure looks comfy. ⭐Fun Fact: this is what is called a rope bed because instead of wooden or metal slate holding up the mattress, rope was used. We get the popular phrase “Sleep Tight” referring to sleeping on tight ropes. ⭐ #MuseumMonday #sleepy #museumcollection

Upcoming online exhibit in April! Mark Making is an exhibit that explores historic artists who have worked or lived in Scugog, and what marks they have left through their artwork. Featuring works from the museum’s collection, including Jimmie Frise, Gertrude Spurr-Cutts, Tom Thomson, and more. 🖌️

This is a photo of a man collecting ice with a large machine from Lake Scugog. Ice used to be harvested from lakes and then stored away, usually in barns, for use throughout the year. Now we simply have machines that make ice for us whenever we want. 🧊 #MusemMondays

Going for a ski or a toboggan is a great winter tradition. And we aren’t the only ones who love the winter activity. Otters are a very playful bunch and will often toboggan, or 'snowslide', down hills on their bellies. #Scugogshoresmuseum #discoverscugog #winterfun

The Head Church was built in 1860 in the exact place it is today. While no longer an operational church, you can rent it out! This old machine is called a leather skiver. It was used to thin, whittle or trim leather. Just one of the many tools used for historic leather working in our Harness Shop!

The cash register is a fan-favourite artifact. It's a staple of our general store exhibit in the school house Emporium. 💰This register was made in 1913, and was used in Bert MacGregor's butcher shop for many years! #museumcollection #scugogshoresmuseum

Going for a walk outside in the winter can be lots of fun if you bundle up. Some animals are also on the move during the new year and if you look carefully you may be able to spot paw prints in the snow 🐾

Happy New Year 🎊 A fresh new year and spring is getting closer. Even the trees are waiting for spring, you can see that each twig has buds that are waiting to bloom. Buds are also a great way to identify trees in the winter when their leaves are all gone.

Stand by the forge to stay warm this winter

With the temperature dropping, some creatures hydornate to avoid the cold. Some bugs, like queen wasps, will spend the winter hiding in old logs to keep warm. If you want to stay warm and build a fire, make sure it is local wood so bugs don’t travel into the wrong neck of the woods. 🔥
