🚨 BREAKING: Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS approaches Earth for perigee (Dec 19; 08:16 UT), admits it’s “just passing through”, will not stay for dinner, aliens, or a peer-reviewed press conference, but will steal all telescope time and leave astronomers emotionally attached.

Should we invest our allocated telescope time for getting extremely high S/N spectra of 3I/ATLAS now or distribute the observations over the next weeks to monitor its evolution?

Nice 3I/ATLAS image from ESA’s XMM-Newton telescope. Comets can glow in X-rays and the main mechanism is solar-wind charge exchange: highly charged ions in the solar wind (C6+, N7+, O7+) slam into the comet’s neutral coma (H2O, CO2, CO), steal an electron, and end up in an excited state... 👇

NASA just shared how HiRISE and the many other “eyes” are seeing interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. From Mars orbit to Sun-watchers, deep-space probes, Hubble & JWST, the Solar System acts as one observatory!

This piece is for everyone who’s tired of “I’m just being open-minded” being used as a shield for sloppy arguments, adorable calculations, misuse of statistics, media hype, and pseudo-Galileo theatrics. If we let cults replace evidence, our brains aren’t “open”… they’ve just fallen out.
