Research highlights stark disparities in Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in the NICU. Infants from lower socioeconomic backgrounds or families who don’t speak English receive less frequent, shorter, and lower rates of KMC than their higher-SES or English-speaking counterparts.

Can you perform Optimal Cord Clamping (OCC) During stabilisation/resuscitation? A recent systematic review & meta-analysis from clinicians in Hungary looked at whether starting resuscitation with the umbilical cord still intact is safe—and the results are promising.

Is there an optimal parent position for Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)? In a randomized controlled trial, researchers in Cork, Ireland compared 30° vs 60° maternal incline during KMC in very preterm infants (median GA 28+1 weeks).

Last year we shared new research on the use of polythene bags in maintaining normothermia in preterm babies during optimal cord clamping (OCC). Despite placing babies in polythene bags before OCC, the study found no increase in normothermia on NICU admission.

Last year we shared this exciting publication investigating the feasibility of measuring heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) wirelessly from a newborn’s forehead after birth. The research compares traditional peripheral limb monitoring with wireless forehead monitoring in newborns.

Delivery room cuddles offer many benefits for premature and sick newborns including physiological stability, enhanced breast milk production, and reduced parental stress.

Optimal care for newborns in the first ‘golden’ minutes after birth is critical to prevent illness & death. A rise in heart rate is the most important indicator of effective ventilation and response to resuscitation interventions however current monitoring methods fall short, risking over treatment.
