It was a great night last night at LESPI's book talk, "The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum," presented by author Margalit Fox at P&T Knitwear on Orchard Street. The audience learned how “America's first great mob boss was a nice Jewish mother," then stayed afterward for a lively book signing and reception.

Earlier this week LESPI's Richard Moses met with Skyline Restoration's crew to review their salvaging of the East River Park's historic Track House's terra cotta ornament — so far it's going beautifully! A big thank you to Parks, LiRo Hill, and especially Skyline for making this happen!

What a beautiful day it was yesterday to table at the Kehila Kedosha Janina Greek Jewish Festival on Broome Street. We chatted with a lot of passersby, including a few friends that visited, and gathered almost 150 petition signatures for LES preservation. Excellent!

Be sure to stop by and see us LESPI volunteers tabling this Sunday May 11 at the Greek Jewish Festival on Broome Street. There'll be live music, great food, fun festivities, and tours of the historic Kehila Kenosha synagogue on what promises to be a beautiful day. We'll be there from 12-4pm.

Despite some showers, we had a fantastic tour of Chinatown yesterday, led by Dr. Bayer Lee, a LESPI Adviser. The tour, titled “Warriors Seweckenamo and Kimlau: From Lenape Village to Chinatown,” wound its way through Chinatown's historic core, ending in Kimlau Square. A wonderful afternoon!

LESPI VP Deborah Wye led a wonderful walking tour for LESPI today, the “History of the Lower East Side in Six Buildings,” where she not only discussed the six buildings LESPI has proposed for NYC landmarking, but delved into the LES's rich & diverse history over the last two centuries. Wonderful!
