Solid list. I’m particularly happy to see it include different types of stories within the genre. I know it has to stick to 28 for the theme, but a crucial addition for me would be ONE CUT OF THE DEAD.

PREDATOR: BADLANDS is brilliant! It expands the universe in cool ways while preserving what’s core to the franchise. What surprised me most was how funny it was. Not in any slapstick way or self-parody, but with a sense of humor that made the action sequences and interaction between characters fun.

I will forever have a soft spot for found footage. MAN FINDS TAPE joins my list of recent favorites. It hits a nice balance of found footage and documentary style. It leans in wonderfully to establishing creepiness in what it shows rather than go for jump scares or hinting at what’s off screen.

Sometimes I get into random themes when choosing books to read. Last year I read several that were horror + snow, or horror + snow + mountain. Now I’ve just recently read two back to back related only by having “valley” in the title.

I love so many things about 28 YEARS LATER. It captured the feeling of DAYS without resorting to repetition of the original’s beats. It took visuals from the original and put them in new context, and then told a new story. I always struggle to avoid spoilers when there are so many details to love.

Today's the day to visit whichever version of Camp Crystal Lake you prefer. I'm not as up to date on all the Jasons and Freddies, but... HEART EYES is a recent favorite in the slasher genre. It knows how to set up a sight gag, set up a clever kill(s), and set up a story you'll love to the end.

I finally saw SINNERS in the theater and wow *that scene* midway through. You could watch it on mute and still feel the impact of the music through what you're seeing. It's such a great expression of the mythology set up at the beginning and for the motivation of (one set of) the villains.

I love roguelikes and get so addicted to their repetitive cycles of dying and retrying. I’ve lost hours (well, days…) obsessively playing card-based ones like Balatro and Slay the Spire, the beautiful design of Hades, and the impossible challenges of CSS positioning.

Now on Netflix. We need more movies like HEART EYES! 😍😍😍

Ah, the time when everyone celebrates that genre movie from the 80s. The one where James Earl Jones is the villain. And I’m reminded of that *other* 80s genre movie where he’s the villain. The one where he delivers one of my favorite lines, “Contemplate this on the tree of woe.”

Everything about this is soooo charming and made with so much love for movies. And it's so true to filmmaking! Even Harrison Ford couldn't keep the fedora from falling off during filming. (Pay close attention to the Endor scene.)

Finished a Call of Cthulhu campaign recently that had started off in a way that reminded me of VIBES. Between the cast, the effects, and the fashion, the movie looks very much like its era (1988). I think Cyndi Lauper has a different outfit in almost every scene. There’s so much pink lol!

For a very different style of horror and the elderly, check out THE RULE OF JENNY PEN. John Lithgow portrays a very convincing and controlling menace. The air of losing physical strength and self determination adds to its theme of psychological horror.

Finally caught HEART EYES and it hooked me from the very start. Romcom slasher that knows how to make both angles work. It’s also so much *fun* to watch, from flawless execution on sight gags to creative kills, to small details of hearts. (And ♥️ for lovely nod to S. D. Wampler.)

Solid list. BLOOD RAGE has lots of synthy goodness in its score and wow some 80s time capsule aspects from super purple shaded eye shadow to cartoonish gore. SICK used the pandemic backdrop well, didn't rely on characters being dumb, and kept a good amount of tension all the way through. ...

Oh hell yeah for THE GORGE. A simple premise, well done. I love how it uses writing, writing surfaces, and messages. What could have been gimmicky is instead visually engaging and fun. But of course the action is the big part. Not repetitive, shifts locations well, and beautiful sets.

Horror is a transgressive, punk rock genre that is at times VERY political. And a large component of our audience and community is very, very queer. You don't have to share our politics to enjoy horror, but you sure as shit should share the ideals that everyone has a right to exist if you make it.

Another fun hiking-in-the-woods horror is SIGNIFICANT OTHER. It doesn’t hide its premise. You get a meteor breaking open early on. It does hide some of the consequences, which might not feel like a big surprise later on. But it paces the reveals well and made me seek out more Maika Monroe movies.

Came across a new favorite typo: trail and error. Maybe it's like following the wrong line of thought when debugging. Or tracking every dependency vuln and thinking they all need to be prioritized over other dev work.
