I received a commission request to combine several, let’s say…big-boned heroes into a group called “The Rotunda.” The person requesting wanted them rushing out a door. He included, “I was thinking it might be insensitive, but since I am on the rotund side myself, it’s probably ok.” Fair enough!

I recently finished this recreation of Adventure Comics #60, featuring a bit of an alteration. It was commissioned as a gift and includes an inside joke of "3-H". I'd tell you what the joke means, but I'm not in on it either!

I wonder if DC has never asked me to draw a comic because I do things like this for MAD. From "Things Superheroes Hate About Their Jobs" in MAD #47. On sale NOW!

Sometimes I get oddball commissions. I recently drew a fake WONDER WONDER 80 PAGE GIANT. (See comments.) At the bottom was a space filler of "Wonder Girl Trips Over a Dog." She was mostly unseen. I then received a new request to fully draw that scene! Ha ha! You guys keep me on my toes. So to speak.

I ran across a Jack Kirby Superman sketch online today. It looked like it would be fun to ink and give it a vintage color treatment. It was!

Even before DC and Marvel mixed their characters with ”Amalgam" comics in the late 90's, I thought Matt Murdock would make a great Batman. As Daredevil, Matt has a Radar Sense, perfect for a bat character. Or, if the two combined (like Amalgam comics) he could be BATDEVIL!

I recently visited the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum in Kansas City. This Egyptian piece has the wrong hand on each arm! I don’t know if it’s a mistake or if it has meaning behind it. I'd feel more connected to the ancient artist if he merely made a silly mistake.

I typically don’t take strip suggestions from people, but I found this commission request to be pretty funny. Plus, As a kid I LOVED when Spider-Man and The Human Torch teamed up as good-natured rivals. Maybe we'll eventually get some of this in the MCU!

On my latest commission, the patron wanted Daredevil in Josie's Bar. He asked for it to be inspired by the classic Frank Miller comics. I made up a new situation, but I tried my best to walk a line between MIller's style and my own!

Here’s a gag that MAD rejected and I completed for the 13th Dimension site. Just for fun! (Btw, please don’t criticize Mad’s decision. I consider them friends. There’s a lot of thought that goes into every issue. It’s a tough job!)

Latest commission finished. Six, little sketch cards!

I took a commission to draw 6 different characters on 2.5 x 3.5 sketch cards. Typically, on something that small, artists draw only a headshot or a bust, and sometimes a full figure. I have only myself to blame for how I decided to draw Antman.

I drew this “MAD” book when I was a kid. It makes drawing an ACTUAL cover even more fun for me! My kid gag might be a bit unclear— It takes place at a Halloween costume contest. The man holding his head, ACTUALLY removed his head! He’s declared the winner, but unfortunately dies at the same.

A couple of months ago, a Production Company contacted me to ask if the rights to DIRTNAP were available. I said "yes" and never heard back. But, it made me realized I should perhaps be more proactive in such things. Too bad I have no idea how to do that.

This latest commission is of the original Great Lakes Avengers (plus Squirrel Girl who later joined). As I was drawing Flatman, it occurred to me he would have fit right in with some of the ’60s cartoon superheroes, such as The Impossibles or The Mighty Heroes!

This cover commission of 1942's DETECTIVE COMICS #73 was a request to switch all the characters with modern versions. Costumes have gotten much more complicated over the decades! Btw, I have no idea what the blue rose-thing at the bottom of the cover is supposed to be, but I drew it regardless. 😊

Latest commission. Mixed media on a blank comic cover. Cosmic rays turned Ben Grimm into The Thing, but it's his puns that make him a monster.

Found this image. I colored some sketch cards (2" x 3.5") digitally and, I think, I only shared the Thing a couple months back.

I had a great time at Planet Comicon! Here's some art I did in sketchbooks, a blank cover, and sketch card. Things got a little odd when someone asked for a Jon/Garfield as Aquaman/Hammerhead . His friend saw it and asked for something similar. The more tired I got, the tackier the drawings got--

When I first drew the "Avengers Circle" with the first 60's appearance of each character, I REALLY disliked how unbalanced the colors were with both Iron Man and the Hulk being grey. So, I used their "second" appearances and made Iron Man yellow and the Hulk green. I made the right decision, right?
