This eclipse has revealed just how much I’ve taken on as a single parent with no support from family or the other parent. I’ve felt scared and alone for a really long time. I can zoom out and look back and see how much we’ve accomplished and for that I’m thankful. But it wasn’t painless and easy.

One imperfect, but useful, way to think of PTSD is the damage that was inflicted by the thing, & CPTSD as the damage done when we had to endure the thing alone-- or, worse, while being abandoned, attacked, or mocked by those we should have been able to turn to for support.

Maybe suicidal ideation isn't all that mysterious when you've felt utterly out of control of your life, your body, & your emotions your entire life. Maybe thinking about suicidal ideation in the context of control & comfort is necessary to understanding it-- & trauma survivors.

Sitting here with my hand on my 9YO’s hair, rubbing her little head until she sleeps. Thinking about how I didn’t get this when I was her age, but needed it so badly and if I had it I might have felt more comfortable talking about my abuse.

Yeah it’s great to find ways to not let the worst things that happened to us define us. Before we can do that though we need to acknowledge the suffering for what it was and what it took from us.

The people who really love you will see you. They won’t make it so difficult and you won’t need to work so hard to force it. That’s the first mistake. The second is thinking we need to hurt to stay. And that’s just not true. Love isn’t painful. It isn’t asking us to suffer.

We aren’t just circling back to what we experienced in 2023 during this transit. We are also circling back to what we carried with us from the years before. Shattered hearts. Blown up dreams. Decimated foundations. Bottomless grief. Lies. Betrayal. Fear. We gotta take it a day at a time.

People with an ACE (adverse childhood experience) score of 4 or more are 12 as likely to have a suicidal thought and attempt suicide as those with scores of 3 or lower. To prevent suicide effectively, we are going to need to intervene earlier to prevent childhood trauma.
