Hey bksy, I’m on the look out for my next project, I’m an experienced Elixir dev (> 8 years commercially, and > 10 years of Ruby before that + I'm still the maintainer of RSpec), very familiar with Phoenix and LiveView, and have enough CSS / JS knowledge to approach projects from a full stack angle.

Just discovered github.com/mixxorz/DSLR, which is a successor of stellar (which I previously used). Makes snapshotting your Postgres database ridiculously easy.

By now I lost count of how many times I've re-implemented Rails' create_or_find_by in other frameworks. Once got told not to use it because it "clutters the Postgres logs". Apparently Postgres is logging constraint violations per default, and it's not easy to turn that off?

Although I really like it over here, I still have to say that there's more buzz over at X. That's not necessarily a good thing (as a full metro isn't necessarily a good thing), but I kind of feel I'm missing out?

When I first started with Rails, I was blown away: helpful error pages in development, effortless migrations, a schema.rb file, clean logging… it all felt like magic. Over time, that magic faded - not because Rails got worse, but because I got used to it. I started taking it for granted.

Today is my last day at the company I’ve contracted with for the past 11 years. I never thought I’d stay this long, and I’m amazed at how much we’ve accomplished together. The best part? It’s not bittersweet - I’m genuinely excited for what comes next.

In the past year, one of the more amusing debugging experiences I encountered involved what appeared to be a race condition. I'll save the specifics for a later blog entry, but TIL that until Rails version 4.2.x, the reload method in Active Record did not bypass the query cache. 😬

Been diving into Python land a bit lately and I was wondering if anyone is seeing performance issues running FastAPI on Cloud Run? We’re literally serving a single endpoint with not much traffic (1rps), but our P99 is 30x the P50 (600ms vs 20ms).

Migrated a Rails app running on DigitalOcean (with Kamal) to Heroku the other day. In the end it wasn't cheaper, because I never figured out how to prune the image registry. Had a little bit of issues getting SolidQueue up and running, but a couple of `db:*` tasks fixed that in the end…

If you're still on a Rails 3 app, be aware that `ActiveRecord::Base.reload` does not bypass or clear the query cache, see github.com/rails/rails/.... Ask me how I know 😅

Working with most languages, it always surprises me how bad their standard library is. If I need more than two lines of code to recursively transform the keys of a hash/map, I'm kind of no longer interested? Libraries/packages don't count, cause that's just pushing the headeach down the road.

Love my Garmin Forerunner watch, especially because of its battery (or rather the reduced processing power which makes it last 7+ days even after 2 years lifetime). However, I would love it even more if they could finally fix the bug that makes it skip alarms after it's been charged.

Just reviewed a mid-sized PR in @github.com (29 files +408 -49), and I have mixed feelings. While I definitely like all the new features (slash commands are awesome!), it felt very sluggish. e.g. it takes ~2 seconds until the comment box opens up. Saving a comment is far from instantaneous either.

Finished support for Strava webhooks this morning. A little bit surprised that they are not delivering the full payload in the webhook (e.g. the activity that got created), but only the ID. Another one of those precious API calls gone ;).

Had some time tonight and now my little 80/20 project is finally persisting data to an actual database (what a novel idea!). Next up: Strava webhooks and whatever else is missing to raise my athelete limit from 1 to n.

Added a navigation bar yesterday. Also switched to a monospaced font, makes it look more interesting to me (hat tip to @joshpigford.com).

One can definitely argue that #RubyOnRails is bloated (but it’s also very easy to keep those things out of your app - looking at you, Action Mailbox). However, the core such as Active Support is such a powerhouse of useful functionality which makes building your application a breeze.

Ended this week with a perfect 80/20 split. Pretty low in terms of mileage (21km), but still felt good. Tomorrow is rest day and already excited for Monday. #runners #runningaddict #runningismytherapy

Working on a project to analyze my running efforts according to the 80/20 rule (80% easy, 20% hard). I don't think I'll ship this view in the end, but it's good to explore the data I'm dealing with. Ultimately I want to show a weekly view that shows the 80/20 split, plus the current reserve.

I really liked svpply back in the day. Any alternatives that are still alive? Not considering pinterest, that never clicked for me, sorry.
