1985-86 season review, #22 Charlie Huddy. Still the best defensive compliment to play with Coffey, Huddy was down to 41 pts and +28, shooting just 4% in 76 GP. Missed time in the playoffs and had 2 assists in 7 GP. Not a year to remember but still a valuable Oiler:

All the other teams' top prospects, starting with the Red Wings. They've added #1 overall pick Joe Murphy, and after that Adam Graves to list of solid if unspectacular youth. Last summer's college UFA signing experiment was a bust, Adam Oates did not have much impact.

Edmonton Oilers top prospects, post-draft. With Tikkanen and Steve Smith having graduated from last year's list, I deem Jeff Beukeboom as the top prospect heading into 1986-87. Kelly Buchberger's stats may not look like much, but I like his style. The rest, may have to wait.

1985-86 season review, #18 Mark Napier. Useful, hard-working player with 24 goals and 56 pts, yet found himself in the doghouse a bit with Sather, not scoring in first 11 games. Only scored 1 goal in playoffs, and currently without a contract:

No Oilers news today. But for the Stanley Cup champion Habs, LARRY ROBINSON, 35, says he's willing to play one more season. He had 82 pts in 79 GP, so why not? Your top batters in the NL and AL are Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs. Hubie Brooks & Tim Raines are having strong years.

1985-86 season review, #17 Jari Kurri. For Canada Day, you're looking at the first non-Canadian to lead the NHL in goals, and he did so with 68 goals, seven more than Bossy. 5th in voting for the Selke. You can see him covering his man in the United Way commercial:

Later picks in the draft include a kid from the same town as the Stastny's, Ivan Matulik, who would need to defect. Goalie Mike Greenlay, and the first ever British draftee, Tony Hand, who was scouted by (teammate) Garry Unger. The Flames wanted him, but oh, they won't have him.

Oilers land former 1st round draft pick! That would be ALFIE TURCOTTE, all 5'9 170 lbs of him, from the Habs, in exchange for nothing. Slats wants more depth at C. This was Serge Savard's first trade since being named to the Hall of Frame, along with Dave Keon & Leo Boivin.

CFL '86. The Eskimos opened their season with a last-second TD pass from Matt Dunigan to Stephan Jones at McMahon Stadium last night. It left the Stamps' coaches LITERALLY SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS in the 21-20 loss for them.

The best player taken in the 5th round may well be Johan Garpenlov, by the Red Wings. The Islanders took a hard-luck, oftened injured youngster named Todd McLellan. While the Oilers selected low-scoring David Haas, LW. In the 6th round they took low-scoring D-man JIM ENNIS of Boston College.

1985-86 season review, #14 Craig MacTavish. Showing no rust after a year away from the game, scored in his first game as an Oiler and regularly though the season. 4 goals vs Flames in the playoffs. Checking, grinding, showing soft hands, this guy does it all.

The first goalies taken in the draft weren't until the 3rd round, Shawn Simpson & Jim Hrivnak, both by the Caps. In the 4th round, Tim Cheveldae (Detroit) and Ron Tugnutt (Quebec) were goalies taken. The Oilers went with LW Dan Currie of the Soo Greyhounds.

You'd love to see it. The Oilers, along with the Nords and Habs, are considering signing 35 year Gilbert Perreault when he becomes a free agent without compension on July 1st. Perreault 'retired' but didn't file his papers, saying the Sabres were 5 years away and he wants a Cup.

In the third round, players like Bob Corkum were taken by Buffalo, Rob Zettler by the North Stars and Jyrki Lumme by the Stanley Cup champs. The Oilers stuck to what their scouts know best, the WHL, and they picked up offensive d-man RON SHUDRA. Rob Brown was still available...

Words such as 'not flashy' and 'could be a Jim Peplinski type' are being used to describe Oilers 1st round pick, 21st overall, KIM ISSEL of the Prince Albert Raiders, a big winger with 68 pts in 68 GP. Barry Fraser said they also liked Jukka Seppo and Warren Babe, time will tell.

If Bob McKenzie is correct, the Oilers will take physically dominant high schooler Tom Fitzgerald with their 1st round pick today, 21st overall. THN has Brian Leetch ranked 14th, comparing him to Phil Housley, saying he may be better suited to forward with his lack of size.

Don't expect a quick return on your 1986 draft picks, not many are said to be NHL ready. Joe Murphy is the expected #1, with d-man Shawn Anderson & US-born Jimmy Carson 2-3. Vincent Damphouse ranked #6 and Adam Graves #9. New coaches, Terry Simpson for NYI, Dan Maloney in Wpg.

1985-86 season review, #12 Dave Hunter. With spot duty on all four lines, contributed his usual 37 pts in 62 GP in a checking role. Missed time after being sentenced for drunk driving, but the whole team appeared in court with him as a show of support.

The Montreal Expos have acquired Dennis Martinez from the Baltimore Orioles. Although Martinez has more career wins (106) than the Expos 5 current starters, they say they'll use Martinez in long relief or occasional starts.

Continuing our season reviews, this is #11 Mark Messier. Again missing time with injuries, 63 GP, but still had 35 goals. Are his days as a 50-goal scorer over? Score 2 shorties in 30 seconds vs Red Wings, played in his 4th all-star game. Only 2 goals in 7 game Flames series.

NHL first and second team all-stars: Gretzky & Coffey on the first team, but Bossy beats out Kurri, relegating the NHL's goal-scoring leader to the 2nd team. Fuhr finished 3rd in goal behind The Beezer and Froese. Anderson got votes at LW and RW and finished 3rd at LW.

Troy Murray has won the Selke trophy as best defensive forward, a bit of a misnomer since he also scored 45 goals this year. Runners-up were Ron Sutter & Guy Carbonneau, with Jari Kurri finishing 5th in voting. Messier had a few votes and even Gretzky got one.

As voted by the 21 GMs, John Vanbiesbrouck has won the 1986 Vezina, edging out Bob Froese by 2 votes. Grant Fuhr finished 3rd in voting. Vanbiesbrouck dedicated the award to last year's winner Pelle Lindbergh. Others getting multi-votes: Malarchuk, Beaupre, Hrudey, Liut & Moog.

Glen Sather has won the Adams trophy as coach of the year, completing an Oiler hat-trick (Gretzky the Hart, Coffey the Norris). When asked if the award was more for his body of work over several seasons, like John Wayne and his lone Oscar, Sather laughed and said it was probably true.

Paul Coffey has won his 2nd Norris Trophy, finishing well ahead of Mark Howe and Larry Robinson. Coffey's 48 goals must've made him a lock, and he has +61 (Mark Howe was +87 to lead the NHL). Coffey also finished 4th in Hart trophy voting.

Gary Suter has surprised some by winning the Calder trophy, easily outvoting #1 overall draft pick Wendel Clark. Suter's 68 pts were 2nd most by a rookie d-man; Larry Murphy had 76 points in 1981. Suter never played again after Game 7 vs Oilers, and the Flames died without him.

The 1986 NHL awards were last night, and we'll go through them one by one. Gretzky has made it 7 for 7 - that's 7 NHL season, 7 Hart trophies, surpassing Gordie Howe's record of six. Gordie's son Mark was third in voting behind sophomore Mario Lemieux. 99 thought 66 might win.

1985-86 season review, #10 Esa Tikkanen. This might have been a lost year, but at least they 'found' 3 reliable new players, MacTavish, McSorley and this guy, the Finn no one can understand. Super confident, aggressive; 7 goals in the regular season then 3 more in the playoffs.

Breaking news - the Canucks have acquired two-time 100 point player Barry Pederson from the Bruins! HOWEVER...they gave up a 1st in 1987, Pierre Turgeon's anticipated draft year, and 21 y/o Cam Neely. Harry Sinden said Neely should be an excellent Adams Division player.

1985-86 season review, #9 Glenn Anderson. "Quietly" racked up 54 goals on a team where Gretzky had 215 pts, Kurri led the NHL in goals and Coffey broke records. A wild finisher and daring rusher, backed it up with 8 playoff goals in 10 GP. Rating: A+

1985-86 season review, #7 Paul Coffey. Recorded the most goals (48) and second most assist + points by a d-man in NHL history. NINE shorthanded goals. But took some heat for only scoring 1 goal in 10 playoff games. Still, if he doesn't win the Norris, it's a CRIME. Rating: A+

1985-86 season review, #5 Steve Smith. Scored his first career goal at the Montreal Forum, and ended year with 4G-22A in just 55 GP (more points than Lowe). Played with intensity, 166 PIM, third on team. Year ended on kind of a down note, can he bounce back?

The Red Wings have released their captain of the last 4 seasons, Danny Gare, as well as ex-Oiler Ed Mio. Gare is only 32, any life left in him? The Oilers signed 1984 8th rounder Todd Ewen of the New Westminster Bruins.

1985-86 season review, #4 Kevin Lowe. Played in his 3rd all-star game. Went an entire calendar year without scoring a goal, then scored in back to back games, then nothing else. Career low 18 points. Finished +25, much lower than partner Fogolin. Rating: C

The Red Wings, specifically Brad Park who's not the GM, deny offering the #1 pick & Petr Klima to the Oilers for Fuhr. Jim Matheson says the Oilers should keep Fuhr/Moog with Darryl Reaugh a year away. The Detroit paper says the Oilers would take Zarley Zalapski #1 overall.
