🐿️❤️ Blackberry continues to amaze us! When Blackberry arrived, she had a severe head tilt and struggled just to stay upright. She has made tremendous progress and is doing very, very well, but she still has a mild tilt, so she's not quite ready for release yet.

While their siblings were still sleeping, Chucky and Russell gorged themselves on all the good stuff. 😁

I took this a couple of days ago. That Chucky and two of his foster siblings. (I would need to see more of them to know who but I think it's Nesquik and Fresa.)

A couple of years ago, our friend Stephy brought us a tiny baby skunk we named Charles. ❤️🦨 On Thursday morning, Stephy’s house caught fire and was completely destroyed. She and her son escaped safely, but they lost absolutely everything. Even her glasses.

I owe everyone a little apology for being so quiet lately. Everyone here is doing just fine. Except me. I am being held together by coffee, stubbornness, and whatever mysterious force keeps wildlife rehabilitators upright when normal people would have collapsed by now.

Let’s talk about rodent teeth. Rodent incisors never stop growing. In a healthy squirrel, the upper and lower teeth line up and wear each other down naturally as the squirrel chews and gnaws.

This porcupine arrived from Alstead this afternoon in extremely critical condition with what appears to be a very severe respiratory infection. He is struggling badly to breathe and is, honestly, a very sick little guy. 💔

Sorry for disappearing for a few days. This past week turned into an absolute marathon over here between baby season, animal care, and trying to keep up with life. I’m slowly getting caught up again. ❤️

Poppy, Lefty and a brief glimpse of Snickers in the background. They are doing great but I am concerned about what I am seeing with Snickers' teeth. This is likely a result of her initial injury but I am hoping some corrective trimming will have them shift into place.

Meet Fresa, Nesquik, and Russell. ❤️ These three arrived Monday evening after being found on the Dartmouth campus and brought to us by the same pre-vet student who rescued Blackberry. It was clear they had been without their mom for a few days.

Blackberry Update: Negotiations Have Failed Blackberry (91g of pure defiance) has entered her “I feel better, so now I commit crimes” era. This was meant to be a quick check-in.

Meet Blackberry 🖤Found on the Dartmouth College campus, she arrived Sunday morning unable to stand and lying on her side — one of those moments where you hold your breath and hope.

Poppy is feeling much much better and he's moving normally now. I couldn't have asked for a nicer recovery. ❤️

Good news from the baby squirrel ward. 🐿️ Snickers still has a little swelling on her face, but today she decided it was time to start sampling squirrel blocks.

Meet Poppy, Lefty, and Snickers. Three baby squirrels whose tree was cut down in Lebanon, New Hampshire on Thursday. All three were too badly injured to be reunited with their mother and arrived here Thursday evening. 🐿️💔

Today we said goodbye to Stuckleberry Finn. 🖤 When Finn first arrived, she was a funny, curious little porcupine with a face that could melt steel and absolutely no understanding that she was supposed to be "wild." The staff at Cornell fell in love with her almost immediately.

After a very long day, Stuckleberry Finn is settled in at the at . The doctors agree that something is not right, but at this point we still do not have answers. They are discussing what additional testing may be needed to try to figure out what is going on with her.

Stuckleberry Finn left here at 4:00 this morning for the long trip to the The Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital at Cornell University . We are trying to figure out exactly what is going on with him and are hoping their specialists can help give us some answers. This was his bon voyage photo. 🤣

Emmett enjoying a grape last night. 🍇 He is growing up fast and doing wonderfully. Later this month, he and Elliott will move out to the outdoor enclosures as the next step in preparing for release. More room to climb, explore, and practice all the important squirrel skills.

This little fellow never got a proper introduction back in December because he arrived immediately after Stuckleberry Finn, who, in true porcupine fashion, rolled in and stole all the attention. Porcupines. No concept of sharing the spotlight. 😏

Peekaboo could not decide whether he wanted love or snacks last night. 💛🍎 So he kept going back and forth between getting attention from me and eating his apple, all while wearing a faint smudge of sweet potato on his nose like porcupine bronzer. 😆 Honestly, he looked fabulous.

Grasshopper had the door to his cage wide open… and instead of running around loose, he stayed right where he was and ran on his wheel. 😄 I guess when you’ve got a setup you like, why leave? 😏

Fun fact: Porcupines are rodents. That means they’re related to squirrels, beavers, chipmunks, mice… and yes, technically the same order as the little peanut thieves in your backyard.

Stuckleberry Finn spent some time exploring his straw today. When he wandered over to the open door of his enclosure, he paused and appeared to sniff the doorway… but made absolutely no attempt to leave.

In this video you can hear the snow thrower rumbling past the door like it’s doing important snow-thrower business. Meanwhile, Stuckleberry Finn is calmly enjoying sweet potatoes and butternut squash like nothing on Earth could possibly interrupt snack time.

MRI confirmed: my pelvis is BROKEN. 🦴 Still feeding animals anyway, thanks to wildly generous humans who sent Henry’s Blocks while I heal. Grasshopper insisted on appearing to personally oversee this thank-you and to stare directly into your soul. 👁️🐿️

Hello. It is me. Justin. I regret to inform you that my human has been temporarily defeated by her own skeleton. She usually makes my squirrel friends their fancy homemade blocks, which require standing for 30 whole minutes.

Yes. Peekaboo is inside. Could he have stayed outside in a -25°F windchill? Sure. Porcupines are tough. Nature is hardcore. I’m aware.

Last night we took in a very sweet little opossum who desperately needed help. Despite warmth, food, and care, he passed quietly in the overnight hours. With temperatures dropping abnormally low across much of the country, opossums are especially vulnerable.

🐿️ It’s National Squirrel Appreciation Day! 🐿️ Elliott is celebrating the only way he knows how: gripping a walnut like it might be stolen. He’s still very small, but otherwise perfectly healthy and already demonstrating advanced snack-defense skills.

I thought I would share this brief video from last night. That's a very large fisher checking out Peekaboo's enclosure. A fisher (Pekania pennanti) is a highly elusive, forest-dwelling mammal in the weasel family, native to North America.

As this year barrels toward the finish line, I need to pause and give a massive, heartfelt, possibly slightly feral THANK YOU to the people who carried us through one of the hardest years we’ve had.
