Licensed NH wildlife rehabilitator. Always tired. Always in need of coffee.
MRI confirmed: my pelvis is BROKEN. 🦴 Still feeding animals anyway, thanks to wildly generous humans who sent Henry’s Blocks while I heal. Grasshopper insisted on appearing to personally oversee this thank-you and to stare directly into your soul. 👁️🐿️

Hello. It is me. Justin. I regret to inform you that my human has been temporarily defeated by her own skeleton. She usually makes my squirrel friends their fancy homemade blocks, which require standing for 30 whole minutes.

Yes. Peekaboo is inside. Could he have stayed outside in a -25°F windchill? Sure. Porcupines are tough. Nature is hardcore. I’m aware.

Last night we took in a very sweet little opossum who desperately needed help. Despite warmth, food, and care, he passed quietly in the overnight hours. With temperatures dropping abnormally low across much of the country, opossums are especially vulnerable.

🐿️ It’s National Squirrel Appreciation Day! 🐿️ Elliott is celebrating the only way he knows how: gripping a walnut like it might be stolen. He’s still very small, but otherwise perfectly healthy and already demonstrating advanced snack-defense skills.

I thought I would share this brief video from last night. That's a very large fisher checking out Peekaboo's enclosure. A fisher (Pekania pennanti) is a highly elusive, forest-dwelling mammal in the weasel family, native to North America.

As this year barrels toward the finish line, I need to pause and give a massive, heartfelt, possibly slightly feral THANK YOU to the people who carried us through one of the hardest years we’ve had.

It's time for the FourWands Wildlife Annual Christmas Morning Popcorn Ball Party!!! We do not feed corn to any of the squirrels in our care except for this one special day when we go... Wild! Everyone gets a popcorn ball - even the wild squirrels outside!

’Twas the night before Christmas at FourWands Rehab, Not a creature was stirring— 😂 Yeah… no. That’s a lie. The corn it was popping, the sugar ran hot, And fingers were burned, for tradition says: “Not.”

I think it was just today that Grasshopper learned how to use his wheel (with Tim's encouragement). This was one of his early attempts but by later in the afternoon, he was training for the Olympics.

Grasshopper enjoying a walnut in front of his new wheel. 💚 I want to thank the two people who recently donated two brand new wheels from our Amazon wishlist. Emmett got the other one but he hasn't been cooperative in letting me get a photo of him with it!

. His fur has come in nicely but he still has a little rat tail with a lion's tuft. He's also decided that I'm not so bad. He will gently take his grapes from me now. ❤️

That's my sweet little Crumpet with a VERY large blueberry. 💙 She's one of the most joyful squirrels I have ever known. She doesn't like to come out of her cage though. It's her safe space and panicks if she can't see the bars over her head. Otherwise, life is good for her. ❤️

Hi Again! Stu's photo has made it to the Semi Finals but we need your help. A win would give FourWands Wildlife Rehabilitation a $10K donation accordingly to the contest. That's absolutely huge for us!

Elliott is a bit of an enigma. You can see he is losing fur - something that often happens in cases of malnutrition. He's going through treatment for internal parasites and hopefully after that he will start gaining and regrowing his coat.

Look at Crumpet's happy little face. A squirrel with her disabilities - vision impairment and a neurological condition - wouldn't last long in the wild. Crumpet lucked out. She's got a soft warm nest, plenty of food and toys and no predators to fear.

I got all kinds of grief yesterday (over on Facebook). I was accused of "teasing" Elliott and, in their "infinite wisdom", some told me that I should just "let him go". Elliott is scared little guy. Imagine getting your face fractured and then getting picked up by a scary human.

Meet Elliott. Elliott was found on the road this morning in Claremont. Initially mistaken for dead, he may have been clipped by a car or he fell from the nest. His mom was around but he was injured enough that he needed medical intervention.

Beautiful little Crumpet taking a nap. 😴 Crumpet is not completely blind - she can't see very well but she can see if it's close to her face. She actually prefers her small cage probably because she feels secure and can see the whole cage. She plays, is active and eats well.

With a heavy heart, I am here to share that precious Peggy has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Last week she went out to The Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital at Cornell University for a thorough examination to determine what exactly was making her walk with difficulty.

I've been through this before. Claudia didn't want any formula when she first came in either. Once again, Stonyfield to the rescue! Can you tell that Crumpet likes her Stonyfield Whole Milk Vanilla Yogurt? I guess Stonyfield goes well on, I mean with, Crumpets.

I said I wasn't taking any babies. My surgery is less than two weeks away. But somehow, the stars aligned just right. I think it was with the help of a certain smiling blind squirrel that helped Danielle bring this little girl, now named Crumpet, to my door this afternoon.

People often ask me if I can touch Peekaboo. Here's your answer. ❤️ Generally porcupines aren't all touchy/feel-y for obvious reasons but they can be affectionate. Peekaboo is very independent and can be rather grumpy but he waits for me by his enclosure's door every afternoon.

Serious Muppet vibes. 😁❤️ Peggy appears to be responding to treatment at home so for the time being, she is staying home. At some point she may need to go for x-rays but she certainly seems to be walking better even if it's still not quite right. She is eating better as well.

Something isn't quite right with Peggy so we are making a plan to send her to Cornell for an examination. She is having some problems walking but it isn't quite clear what the root of the problem is.

The bat tent is set up and almost ready to go. I just need to tape down the floor to make sure there is no escape route. The bats will stay in the tent to practice flying and catching bugs in the air. (I have a live bug trap to help "stock" the tent with native insects.).
