Today marks #GreekGenocide remembrance day for the victims from Eastern Thrace. During Easter of 1914 (April 6), Ottoman authorities intensified their persecution of Greeks with brutalities including massacres, forced labour, boycotts,, confiscation of property and swift bdeportations.

July 1923: 8,000 Anatolian Greeks were seen hiding in caves near Aleppo, Syria. These were the Greeks who survived the death marches to the Turkish interior during the genocide and were evacuated and cared for by the Near East Relief. www.greek-genocide.net

Greek men of military age were denied passage out of #Turkey in Sep 1922 with their expelled families, regardless of their combatant status. They were marched into the interior where they were tortured before the majority were massacred. Over 100,000 Greek men met their fate in this way.

The final phase of the #GreekGenocide took place at Smyrna (Tr: İzmir) in September 1922 when Kemalist forces entered the city and took part in an orgy of looting, rape and massacre that targeted the city's Christian population, primarily Greeks & Armenians. They then burnt the city to the ground.

Panagiotis Nordas (standing bottom right) with the scout group of Balya. Nordas was a law graduate who worked at the Economic Commissionership of #Balya as a supervisor and formed the Balya scout group. He died in Greece in 1960. There were 6,000 Greeks living in Balya prior to the genocide.

Pelopidas Epifanidis, a Greek doctor from Samsun was hanged on Sep 8, 1921 by order of the Independence Tribunals at Amasya (aka Courts of Independence) which issued arbitrary death sentences to 100's of Greeks. Among them were many influential citizens such as publishers, mayors, doctors, etc.

Alexandros Anthopoulos was from Samsun. He and his brothers were wealthy merchants involved in importing and exporting goods such as tobacco and minerals. Feridunoğlu Osman Ağa was a brigand and Kemalist military commander responsible for the murder of a vast number of Greeks during the #GreekGenocide. Osman roamed the Black Sea region with his band of ‘cut-throats’ and was responsible for numerous massacres and deportations of Greeks & Armenians.

Samsun is a city located in northern Turkey along the Black Sea shoreline. During the #GreekGenocide, Greeks from Samsun and the surrounding region were deported in three waves: in 1916/17, 1921 and 1922. Before the genocide, Greeks in Samsun numbered ~80,000 (65% of the total population).
