The mandatory evacuation order for the Hanwell Drive area has been lifted, except for residents of 119 Hanwell Drive. That building remains unsafe to enter due to extensive damage. Firefighting operations are ongoing at 119 Hanwell Drive and residents are asked to continue avoiding that area.

Even during a fire ban, CSA/ULC-approved propane & gas appliances (BBQs, fire bowls, stoves, patio heaters) are allowed — but not risk-free. Never leave them unattended, always follow manufacturer’s instructions, and keep them away from anything that can burn.

In hot, dry, windy conditions, mulch can catch fire—from decaying material that builds up heat, sparks, embers or discarded smoking materials. Prevent fires by keeping mulch moist, maintaining a 45 cm gap from structures, limiting depth to 5 cm, and fully extinguishing smoking materials.

Use of consumer fireworks is prohibited during provincial burn ban. Permitted professional fireworks displays—like those planned for Natal Day—will move forward (dependent on wind, fog or rain). These shows are conducted by licensed, insured companies that follow federal safety regulations.

Emancipation Day also honours African Nova Scotians who, shut out of many public services, built their own. In 1966, Hammonds Plains founded Canada’s first all-Black volunteer fire department. The Pockwock Road hall protected neighbours until amalgamation in 1996—and was returned in 2020.

Emancipation Day, officially recognized in Nova Scotia since 2021, lands on August 1 as a call to confront Canada’s history of slavery and the ongoing realities of anti-Black racism.
