The chimney project (for now) at the Gate Lodge and & Manor House Breakfast Room has been completed, and all of the scaffolding is being removed. These chimneys will be restored in the future when funding is secured. Here are some photos!

July gotten away from us, so we're catching up on some history posts: F.A. & Gertrude Seiberling's son, Willard married Mary Gerrish on July 18, 1923 in Oberlin, Ohio. This photo was taken about 1940; Mary & Willard are in front of the Great Hall fireplace between two unidentified men.

There is scaffolding around chimneys on the Gate Lodge & the Manor House Breakfast Room. We're dismantling these two chimneys because they’re showing signs of structural issues. So for everyone's safety the chimneys are being removed down to the shelf area & capped until they can be restored.

James Penfield "Penny" Seiberling was born #OnThisDate in 1898, the 4th child of F.A. & Gertrude Seiberling. F.A. often wrote letters to his children on their birthdays; here's a snippet of one that F.A. wrote to Penny when he turned 5, noting the overlap with July 4th celebrations.

A year ago was the solar eclipse right about now, so we dug through our photos, remembering this awesome & wondrous event, and especially the few minutes of totality.

The Great Garden has excellent growing conditions, so the perennials spread quickly. To keep the garden in check, our volunteers kick off the new season with "the big dig," digging up, potting perennials that we then sell at our Plant Sale, starting 5/17. Here's some that are just starting to grow!

Willard Seiberling who died #onthisdate in 1981.The 3rd child of F.A. & Gertrude, Willard was a talented amateur photographer & his photos with details of the estate are invaluable to us. In this undated letter, he tells his parents about his new hobby.

We took a walk looking for spring today and guess what? We found daffodils, hyacinths, forsythias & more in bloom! We open for the 2025 season tomorrow at 10am. We look forward to seeing you on the estate soon.

F.A. Seiberling grew up in a large Victorian house on E. Market St. in Akron, the 2nd of 9 children. A weekly ritual for the large family was Sunday dinner for extended family. After Stan Hywet was built, F.A. and Gertrude continued this tradition, hosting family dinners and parties. #TBT

Also, to get ready for the season, we power wash all the garden benches!

The Manor House interior has been cleaned & is ready for our opening on Apr 1, and we're spiffing up the outside, getting ready for your visit: sending out the Model A in the Playgarden for touch-ups, trimming the gray birches and pollarding (a type of pruning) the apple trees.

What a beautiful day! We found snowdrops in bloom in the Dell. And a school of carp in the Lagoon. Spring and our season opening is around the corner! 🌷

It's been a week of celebrating our VP, Valarie Still, who is retiring today. Yesterday, many blondes and many Valaries --and F.A.!-- were in the Carriage House wishing her all the best!

It's #NationalDressDay, so we're sharing some dresses from our collection. Top: worn daughter Virginia Seiberling to a family Christmas celebration in 1924. (dress is bright green for emphasis). Bottom: a dress worn by Gertrude to F.A. &Gertrude's 50th wedding anniversary party on Oct. 12, 1937.
