I've been seeing lots of orange cycles around Ahmedabad. Turns out they are from the Saraswati Sadhana Yojana, a Gujarat government scheme that distributed over 790,000 cycles to class 9 girls from lower income, marginalised caste families, starting in 2019.

I'm happy to see that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has started renewing the pavement outside some Janmarg BRT stations. Next step is to renovate the stations themselves!

These new walkways are under construction near Science City Rd in Ahmedabad. Why are we spending money to build footpaths that are too narrow for people to use? IRC:103-2022 calls for a minimum clear width of 2 m for footpaths in residential areas.

Dear Architects, it's difficult to create a continuous walkway if the vehicle ramps run along the entire frontage of a property. A project like this should have a single access point to minimise interruptions in the pedestrian realm.

This new footpath is so narrow that there is nothing for these bollards to protect.

I applaud Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's foresight in building median BRT stations on Science City Rd. Yet without dedicated lanes, buses are getting stuck in traffic. The bus I took this evening had an average speed of only 13.4 km/h from Science City to SG Hwy. Can we add the lane separators?

Surat’s Sitilink is the largest BRT network in India, and the system has a fully electric fleet. It was great to hear from the BRT team at Surat Municipal Corporation about the city’s plans to expand the bus fleet, improve lane enforcement, and enhance last-mile access.

During our Janmarg ride to Maninagar our driver stopped in the middle of the street rather than docking at the BRT station. Everyone had to file to the front door and climb down the narrow steps. We need Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to facilitate better driver training.

It's great to see the ongoing street improvements in Ahmedabad's Navrangpura area, but shouldn't we make the new footpaths a bit wider? With the current design we might end up with the same situation we have now—people walking in the carriageway—after spending all this money.
