It shouldn’t need to be said but if you were alive in the Victorian era/the antebellum south/ancient Rom etc… you wouldn’t be an aristocrat attending fancy balls or the like, you would at best be a servant toiling to give someone else a life of leisure. And it only gets worse from there…

Once you accept that, overall, people in the past weren't particularly more cold-hearted, especially around children and loved ones, than we are today, it becomes a lot easier to understand why religion and a general belief in the afterlife has been so powerful.
