From Ireland to UW, William Campbell’s journey was full of unexpected turns. A lucky encounter with parasitology led him to develop ivermectin—a drug that not only treats heartworm but also prevents river blindness, saving millions. His work earned him a Nobel Prize. Sometimes, luck leads to legacy.

Last month, Chad’s Ministry of Health, with support from the Reaching the Last Mile Fund, led a major effort to stop the transmission of river blindness and lymphatic filariasis. Implemented with The Carter Center’s help, the campaign treated nearly 3 million people across 29 districts. #BeatNTDs
