If you put stereo LOM Geofones into the bark of a giant old redwood. You can actually get a quasi-stereo image that I find more captivating than contact mic recordings made in mono. What’s the quietest mic I own? That’d be the Lewitt LCT 540 S. It is astonishingly good at recording the subtle sounds of almost silent spaces. But there are trade offs. It is a large, heavy, and difficult to wind/waterproof microphone. However, I’ve found those obstacles to be worth the trouble.

Using an MKH8040 and MKH8030 to record up the trunk of this 250+ ft Redwood. The soundscape changes dramatically from the forest floor to the high canopy above, so I’m using the directionality of this Mid/Side rig to capture more sounds of the canopy. Hear it: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/nat...

I like using the convex shapes of burn scars to create a focusing effect when recording super quiet soundscapes. If you put the mics right up against the tree, the burn scar accentuates the sound of the space. Hear these ancient redwood forests: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/nat... #fieldrecording
