Stop taking their insane claims at face value. For one, space isn’t “cold.” It’s a vacuum. Cooling in space isn’t “free” as Musk et al. claim because there’s no medium (like an atmosphere) to move the heat. The ISS uses a dual-loop system of water and ammonia to convert heat to infrared radiation.

During the brief time I worked in tech, the most exciting project I almost joined involved reimagining the social role of the gas station for the EV era. What would charging change about how people used these spaces. Project kind of fizzled for reasons unclear but that’s the thinking we need.

Increasingly want a gig where I don’t ever have to hear the words AI again. But I know that’s folly.

I posted a long rant about AI sustainability on LinkedIn but the gist is that too much of the focus remains on questions of measurement. Measurement is crucial but we need to be thinking more longterm about what kinds of social/ecological/political relations AI produces. Sustainability is relational
