About an hour’s drive from Bogotá is another family run slice of bird heaven - Jardin Ecantado. I’ve never seen so many beautiful hummingbirds in one place - including this Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. #birds #colombiabirds #hummingbirds

My second day out of Bogota started out more local, with a visit to Parque La Florida, a wetland not too far from the airport and my guide Juan Carlos (thank you!) dragged me out early enough to see the Bogota Rail. #birds #colombiabirds #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography

I was sad to leave Cali, but of course new Colombia bird adventures lay ahead, with my next base of operations being Bogota. Day 1, was a trip up to the paramo habitat of Sumapaz N.P. My guide, Juan Carlos Rubiano Reyes, did an amazing job of leading me up into the high Andean elevation.

I ended my visit to Valle del Cauca and Cali with a morning at Humedel Plantares, led by my guide Christian Trejos. We wandered the slim corridors of natural wetlands among the otherwise agriculturalized lands - an interesting variation from the higher elevation species of the previous days.

My next stop in Valle del Cauca department was another well-known reserve/restaurant/inn established by the warm and welcoming Doña Dora. The food here was delicious, along with the spectacular views and, again, amazing bird abundance and diversity.

My next stop in the Valle del Cauca department was at La Florida Bosque da las Aves, a really wonderful family run restaurant, inn, and all round birding paradise around the relatively well-known “KM18” area. A beautiful place to spend the day viewing birds, including many Colombian endemics.

A wonderful thing about my stay at La Minga in Valle de Cauca Colombia was the introduction to the almost absurd diversity of hummingbird species in the country. They were attracted to the lodge’s veranda by feeders, so that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but who was I to complain?

My Colombia visit kicked off with a flight to Cali to explore the Valle del Cauca Dept. It was an adventurous, winding drive to locate La Minga Ecolodge, which would be my base camp for the next three days. It was a beautiful spot with very kind hosts, delicious food, and rich with birds.
