Four facts about women in the news that may surprise you (or confirm what you already know):

A few months ago “nudifiers” were unheard of, but in the last two weeks they’ve made headlines after hundreds of thousands of requests were made asking Grok to remove women’s clothing from photos. They are not just limited to Grok however, and have been rising in popularity since 2024.

“Nudifiers” — AI tools that turn photos into nudes, often used on women without consent — are on the rise partly thanks to ads on Meta. Research by The Indicator found 9,156 ads for 11 such tools over two months. Non-consensual porn accounts for 98% of all deepfakes, with 99% of targets being women.

Women are still only one in four people seen, heard or read about in traditional news media. That's our key takeaway from the latest Global Media Monitoring Project's report, the world’s largest and longest-running study of gender in the world news media.

More than half (58%) of girls and young women around the world have experienced some form of online harassment. The majority experience it for the first time between the ages of 14 and 16.
