The last day of September
It's raining. A slow, steady, light rain. A trailing edge of wetness brought to us by Tropical Storm Imelda, which is spinning off the Atlantic coastline, ready to be pulled eastward later today by the bigger, stronger Hurricane Humberto. We're in the middle of the most active part of hurricane season - that time of year when the tropics give birth to spinning rainmakers while cold fronts attempt to push further south.

The Power of Containers
This week, we have watched caterpillar after caterpillar crawl off their host plants and wrap themselves into chrysalises. Green and brown packages hung by threads of silk now dangle throughout the gardens. Tucked safely away in their self-made containers, they will change during the next few weeks through one of the most amazing phenomena of the natural world - metamorphosis. Within these containers of their own making, the caterpillars will literally dissolve and reform their bodies into butterflies.

Last week I saw a movement near our wood chopping block. I carefully uncovered the block and found this fella, a dapper Eastern fence lizard. It was his bright blue neck and side belly that truly caught my eye, but he was also possibly the largest fence lizard I've seen here in NC at about 8 inches long.

We've seen some changes to our woods since the flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal in mid-July. The ground is bare where water sluiced down the hill in torrents, finding the paths of least resistance and creating waterfalls and rivulets through the leaves and soil. The creek bed, now much wider and deeper, feels stripped naked as exposed roots dangle from the edges of the banks.

Late July – Hot Critters ( with videos)
It's late July, and it feels like it! Hot, hot, hot. Our weather station recorded 90+° F on 19 out of the last 29 days, with heat indexes over 100°F on 15 of those days and an astounding 127°F "feels like" reading just a couple of days ago. July has been all about floods and heat this year, a tell-tale sign of a warming planet.

July is the month when the gardens begin to ebb. The early summer burst of blooms is giving way to ragged, browning seedheads, a sign of the doldrums of midsummer. The heat is oppressive. The weeds are winning. And after 11 inches of rain from TS Chantal last week, the first signs of waterlogged plant stress are showing up. It's a time of transition.

The Power of Community: Helping After Disasters
"My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world." - Fred Rogers During the days since Tropical Storm Chantal slogged through central North Carolina last Sunday and left catastrophic damage in her wake, ranging from flooded homes, schools, and businesses to municipal water systems torn apart and personal well-water contaminated, so many helpers have shown up to put impacted people's lives back together.

Tropical Storm Chantal came ashore in South Carolina and then crawled up through central NC at a snails’ pace, circling and dumping rain all afternoon.

In the woods, when we’re not there…
When we are not down in our woods observing changes in the plants, listening to birds, or looking for newborn deer, critters who prefer to remain unseen come out to play. Our trail camera captured a couple of them this week. First, a barred owl seems to be munching on something on the ground... Then, a gray fox is seen carrying something in its mouth.

Mom’s Legacy: a birthday musing
Mom...1948 On May 24th, 99 years ago today, my mother was born. She passed away in 2019, just before the COVID pandemic swept across the world. If she was still alive today, she would be furious, appalled, and incredibly sad to see what is happening in our country, in our world. You see, my mom spent much of her career and most all of her life fighting the systemic and cultural discrimination that kept women and minorities from getting ahead, from realizing their American Dream, from being equal and valued and heard.

Adventure and Awe in Utah
San Juan River canyon Every now and then Mr. EndlessSeeker and I manage to tear ourselves away from the comfort and familiarity of Pokeberry Pines to explore other corners of the world. Traveling to unfamiliar places helps us learn about other cultures and ecosystems as well as appreciate what we have at home. Recently, we took a ten-day trip to southern Utah to explore canyonlands and national parks far different from the humid, temperate climate where we live.

Hey y'all. I know I haven't written a lot here on EndlessSeeker lately, but I have a good excuse, which I'll get to later. But first, spring is glowing in our yard these days! Just look at all the flowers blooming right now... After a too-long dry spell, we had almost 2 inches of rain this week, and the plants are responding with lots of blooms.

The gifts of spring
It's here. Officially. Springtime. Hooray! And with the season comes beautiful and bountiful gifts from the earth. Four years ago there wasn't a single violet on our land. Today, you can't walk anywhere on the property without stepping on or near a violet. We simply transplanted a few plants from my dad's yard and they multiplied by the thousands. I love this spring flower so much.

A quiet unfurling
I sat in the woods and stared at the flowering trout lilies.I listened to the crow's caw. I tipped my chin toward blue-gray skies,And felt an opening. Something soft as a whisper deep in my belly. It was like dappled light in a rainforest - just a hint of sky above the dense, tall canopy.I felt it in my gut, my heart, my bones -

One of my favorite things in the middle of winter is seeing hints of spring to come. It reminds me that everything is temporary and cycles are part of life. Even if darkness falls on a nation, light will return.

Icy scene after our first snow/ice event in three years. A couple of nights ago we had our first snow event since 2021 - a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The next morning the yard and gardens had transformed into a shiny, crusty, frozen scene. It crunched under my feet as I walked over the thin layer of ice-covered snow.

In many ways, everything feels vulnerable right now. Winter has laid the landscape bare - trees and stones naked upon the earth, topography vividly exposed from hill to stream. Critters have less cover to hide in. Lush gardens have melted into layers of brown leaves and rotting stems. National and international politics make the security and steadiness of the world feel vulnerable.

In the quiet shadows of winter Solstice…
I'm sitting here listening to the rain drip onto the roof, the trees, the pond as the morning light slowly unfolds into a new day. There are no crickets chirping, frogs calling, cicadas trilling, or birds singing for mates. It is the quiet time of year here. The time when light grows short and animals grow quiet. The time when plants and trees send their energy underground and rest inside their skeletons.
