York Theatre Royalâs Paul Crewes: âWeâre producing more than ever before. Weâve got to keep reinventingâ
Hosting Gary Oldmanâs first stage appearance in four decades is not just a casting coup, but emblematic of York Theatre Royal boss Paul Crewesâ ambitions for the venue. He tells Theo Bosanquet about working to make York a destination for artists and audiences

Youth Theatre should be central part of a national strategy for young people. It's the most human, holistic, safe, exploratory and fun way of supporting young people. Why isn't it? Because it isn't recognised as such, because it's underfunded, and because we're not sustainable as a sector.

These are literally the core functions of theatre with young people. I can't think of any other art form - or indeed activity - that does them better. We do ourselves a massive disservice if we only speak about our work in terms of skills and pipelines.

We need space away from study and screens in which young people can explore issues and emotions face-to-face with other humans; build understanding, play, experiment and get things wrong. We need somewhere for them to think about the world, safely. We need a platform for them to speak out.

At a time in which young people are disconnected, lonely, unhappy and disempowered, we need spaces for them to feel like they belong. To spend time together socially. To feel happier. And to build connections with people who aren't like them.

Youth Theatre is often required to justify its existence by the skills it offers to young people (oracy, creativity, teamwork) and the talent it develops for professional theatre. These are useful, but I think there's something else it does that is much more important.

Statistics around cases that make it through the CPS process ARE lower than you think. Being able to prove something beyond reasonable doubt is hard when it's one word against another. Systems are archaic and misogynistic. Survivors are statistically dismissed.

I agree. Instead of rewriting history, sit in the discomfort, deal with the betrayal, and learn how to be wary of any charismatic literary figure who seems more mythical than man. Predators are sneaky, and hard to catch for a reason: the dazzling image they project is well-crafted and maintained
