On the other side of the Thames, the new Battersea Power Station was beginning to appear. Built in two phases, from 1929 to 1935 and 1937 to 1941, its four chimneys would become an icon of the riverside. Now a shopping and apartment complex 8/9

1929 also saw the construction on a few buildings that would come to be some of the most emblematic modernist designs in Britain. In Fleet Street the Daily Express Building was being built. Initially designed by Ellis & Clarke, it was given a sleek overhaul by Owen Williams 7/9

1929 also saw the completion of a number of other buildings in the capital that heralded the coming age of modernity; Bechstein Hall, now Greybrook House, showrooms for the piano manufacturers, designed by Thomas Tait of Sir John Burnet & Partners 2/9

Announcement of the discovery of the massive pylon of the temple of Ptolemy VIII at Athribis, with fascinating astral imagery! I was lucky to be there when these reliefs appeared. Another testimony of the importance of the astral sciences at the site! 🪐💫

One of the outrageously important runic inscriptions on the Viking-style Galloway Hoard, deposited c. 900 in what is now SW Scotland. The exciting kicker is that the runes are ANGLIAN, not Old Norse, likely made by an Anglo-Saxon Northumbrian. My images from the Treasure Trove in Scotland viewing.

Feels like that story should sit alongside this one. European cities reclaiming public squares from cars. Incredible we ever let these spaces become car parks.

Why are we so comfortable filling our most iconic public spaces with a bunch of metal boxes?

Terribly sad really. The television has done what even some of the most vigorous nationalists of the 18th and 19th century could not.
