Book recommendation 2: The Flavia De Luce series by Alan Bradley. Flavia is an 11-year-old girl in 1950s England who is a chemist and likes poisons. She solves murders. Flavia's life is one of pain, but she has a heart as big as the entire planet - I love this character.
