Got a copy day 1 and am finally getting into it - really good stuff. I finally landed a real design systems gig this year and I've been trying to plot a good course for us. Donnie is mapping so much of my intuition about implementation to well-reasoned systematic thinking I'm definitely gonna adopt.

I find this take baffling. I use React all day and I love all of these things. I just like working at a level of abstraction and find the cost bearable. I respect folks who malign frameworks in favor of their craft at a lower level, but it sucks how often this sentiment comes up.

I've been burned out for a while, but it is really cool being able to pick up this games platform project again and have a prototype like this done in one weekend. Really helps to be able to act quickly when I feel up to it.

You often hear "software development is changing, and we must adapt" because of Claude Code. But for my entire career, code has been the *easiest* part of making shit people care about, and we still haven't adapted. The easier coding becomes, the less often we ask "do users actually NEED this?"

Narrative: if you build enough, you'll find success. Theory 1: success is random, higher quantity increases probability of a winner -> GenAI adopter. Theory 2: success follows quality, building more improves craft and taste, refining the process to achieve a winner -> GenAI avoider.

Read something good but confusing and then looked up the Reddit discussions to get a bit of direction on it. Left with a profound sense that some people don't know what irony is. Multiple discussions devolved into "this character said X, so your interpretation is wrong" - the character was lying!

Finally had a breakthrough on CSS property evaluation and was able to do something kind of interesting. Every nested div has the same class utils: "@group nest-all b p rd-lg" = border, padding, large radius; this is a group, all sizes nest. From there the CSS handles nesting for you.

I complain a bit about work but my new manager saw I was really busy and quietly cancelled the presentation I had been voluntold for next week and hadn't started yet. I think that's one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me at work. I need to nominate her for company awards now.

When I was a kid in the 90s I got Popular Science and I remember a whole issue about flying cars, the transit of the future. Geniuses were just about to bring it about. Years later I visited the Air and Space Museum and there was a flying car there built in 1945.

I don't trust anyone to build a tool who is not, themselves, using that tool to build something they care about.
