IMHO, House of the Dragon is at its best when it focuses on the central characters--Rhaenyra, Daemon, and Alicent--and lets the actors just let loose. Everyone else is fine, but it's these three characters who are really the central sources of narrative and emotional energy.

The second episode of House of the Dragon is quite good. Definitely some of the best we’ve seen since the first season.

Has Andrew Rannells ever played a character who wasn’t absolutely insufferable?

While I really do enjoy House of the Dragon a lot, as I'm finishing my review (going live in a bit), I really realized a.) how little I care about most of these characters and b.) how really, really sloppy the writing has been from the jump.

I’ve loved his other books, so I knew this one was going to be good. Stuart has a keen eye for grim human detail, and his mastery of setting is unmatched. His books make me miss Scotland in all of its austere, breathtaking beauty.

I know it’s not the point of Cape Fear, but I really need Patrick Wilson to ruin me. Like. Yesterday.

Cape Fear is like if they took a film noir from a Poverty Row studio and filmed it in Technicolor. It’s lurid. It’s absurd. It’s compulsively viewable.

I just started the Apple TV version of Cape Fear, and I gotta say that I love the way the show just leans all the way into the pulp of it all.

I'm back at work in the Appalachian horror novella, and I think I'm really letting my inner country boy out. One character is described as being "stubborn as old dirt," and if that isn't just the most Appalachian thing I've ever written.

I quite enjoyed the premiere of House of the Dragon, though it did remind me that this whole saga is a tremendously depressing one, a long slog through misery, death, and slaughter. Seems very apropos for our current moment, though...

Now watching the second episode of The Vampire Lestat, and I adore how totally bonkers this show is. Just like the novel. And Sam Reid continues to be a vision.

For today's Swoony Sunday at Omnivorous I wrote a bit about how my new queer Appalachian love story, Hittin' the Right Note, is a second chance in many ways. Writing about two men finding a second chance at love also gave me a chance to fall in love with my home state of West Virginia again.

I’m watching the second season of The Four Seasons, and I honestly love it. I enjoyed the first season, but it’s definitely reached emotional and aesthetic maturity.

I’m still making my way through Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Quest. It’s not a slog, though. It might be deliberately paced, but her skills at character and plotting and world building are truly top-notch.

Aaah....just found out I've been accepted to the Appalachian Literary Arts Festival in Morehead Kentucky this August. Truly, what an honor. Can't wait to join some of my fellow Appalachians to celebrate our literary heritage and sell my queer Appalachian love stories!

It really does my heart good to see so many public institutions--libraries, universities, municipalities--celebrating Pride. Given this administration's avowed hostility toward queer people, these signs of support really, really matter.
