Here’s the thing: the government doesn’t have to shut down. Trump backed out of negotiations to keep the government open. He told Republican members of Congress not to bother dealing with Democrats. The ball was in his hands. And he fumbled it.

The Democratic Party became the party cemented in civil rights in 1948 because of a young mayor, Hubert Humphrey. Nothing good in our party happens without new voices pushing the party to evolve on issues.

Trump said he'd go after the "enemy within." Well, the "enemy" is anybody on his personal shit list: political opponents, late night TV hosts, and those who say things he doesn’t like. This transcends partisanship. Every American’s freedom is at risk.

What unites a corn farmer, a miner in the Iron Range, and a new refugee in the Twin Cities? It’s economics. Under Trump, working class folks like them are falling behind. Our message has to be about uplifting them.

Trump is bailing out Argentina’s economy to the tune of $20 billion while our farmers are enduring a crisis that he caused with his tariffs. On top of that, food, housing, health care and electricity costs continue skyrocketing. That’s not putting America first.
