Hulk Smash or Hulk Trash?: A Review of Marvel Multiverse RPG
Editor's note: Oh gee! I am extatic to present this, first article done by my good friend of almost 10 years by now, Tudor. Those of you who have read the blog for a while might know the name, for he is the one who made me implement the infamous "Tudor Rule" in my D&D games (those he is part of at the minimum), which entails that on a turn you can't do more than 50 damage to a single enemy until level 10.

When RPGs Become Literature: From Planescape Torment to Thousand Year Old Vampire
When people envision role-playing games, they probably envision the stereotypical contents: dungeons with monsters and loot tables, game masters describing fantastical fables to others, and long campaigns driven by dice rolls in hunting maps. However, like theatre and film, the world of role-playing games is not monolithic. Some games, whether table-top based or computer-based, have ambitions well beyond entertainment and, while we normally think about literature in terms of its conventions and pages, these games get closer to things we are more accustomed to thinking about in literature.

I Donât Like Online Play. However, you might!
I'll confess: I do not enjoy playing tabletop RPGs online. That's perfectly fine, everyone has different preferences. Personally, playing online will never yield the same satisfaction as playing around a real table. That saying, the few times I played online the GMs were amazing and I have nothing but respect towards their craft. This piece by no means should be taken as slander against them or anyone that prefers to play or run games online.

Stop Treating the Lore Like Scripture â Just Play the damned Game
It is, at this point, no secret that I'm an oWoD guy, mostly. I'm old and grumpy and somehow, not particularly enamored with the direction the oWoD line is going. (The rest of this opinion is probably hidden behind a paywall or has left to fight a mysterious war in the Middle East. You decide.) However, I keep talking to people about RPGs, and they keep being interested in the hobby.

In the expansive, imaginative worlds of tabletop roleplaying games, few ideas are as fundamental, as resonant, or as conducive to deep player engagement as a pantheon of gods and the religions built around them. What is Fireball: An Exploration of Vancian Magic and its Alternatives
Vancian magic, the spell system created by author Jack Vance, has shaped the last forty-plus years of Dungeons & Dragons as well as the countless tabletop RPGs that have come after it. Looking back on the history of D&D, Vancian magic, aka "fire-and-forget," defined how magic is used (and understood) in tabletop role-playing games (RPGs) for generations. Players played wizards, prepared spells every day knowing they would be lost into the ether the moment they were cast.

In the expansive, gothic-punk landscape of the World of Darkness - where vampires battle their inner Beast and struggle to maintain their true self, werewolves wage a losing war against cosmic corruption, and mages warp reality at the cost of their own sanity - there is a game that strikes a distinctly different note. The Role of the GM: More Than Just Another Player
I recently saw a post on r/rpg that said the Game Master (GM) is "just a player" and nothing else. The thread suggested that any player can do it and that it's really not any big deal to be a GM. Alignment Revisited: Is the Classic D&D Alignment System Still Relevant (or Useful)?
There are probably no topics that create as much spirited discussion and disagreement as the alignment system from Dungeons & Dragons. For decades, the 3x3 space of Lawful-Neutral-Chaotic and Good-Neutral-Evil has provided a quick way to assess the moral landscape of characters and their world perspective. Today, it often serves as an over-simplification, a prison for roleplaying, or simply as a dusty relic.

Quill, Paper and Rice: How Cartography Becomes a GMâs Greatest Tool
To many-a Game Masters, the world-building aspect of GMing is a labor of love, taking great care to create lore, characters, and plots, sometimes that are not even relevant to the campaign, for in the words of the great Matt Colville, worldbuilding is more often then not something that we do for ourselves! Fangs and Folklore: What Sinners (2025) Can Teach World of Darkness Storytellers About Vampire Storytelling

Managing Player Expectations: Aligning Your Tableâs Vision for a Campaign
We have all been there; the campaign starts from the best place possible, the characters are great, those story hooks are intriguing, and all is good. For many players magic items are the epitome of treasure in Dungeons & Dragons. This quest brings excitement derived from uncovering a legendary item: a glowing sword, a strange artifact, or perhaps a cloak of invisibility and promises power, opportunity, and a deeper connection to the fantastical. This excitement surrounding magical loot has always accompanied D&D as a product, and ensured they have become established as some of the most anticipated rewards in a campaign.

Sigil & Shadow is a contemporary occult RPG that builds on the legacy of World of Darkness, Kult, and other RPGs that fuse horror, personal transformation, and occult conspiracies, but it does not offer one particular, defined world like those games. GMing for the Visually Impaired: AÂ Guide
Tabletop roleplaying games are inherently built on storytelling and shared imagination, which unite players together. While TTRPGs do rely heavily on the theater of the mind, a TTRPG experience can still be gatekept (often unintentionally) through barriers for disabled players and GMs. For many blind and visually impaired people the barriers can exist from inaccessible character sheets to visual playstyles that could provide critical information that excludes them from table discussion.

Old School Adventures Worth Stealing From: Classic Modules and Their Enduring Lessons
We stand on the shoulders of giants, even if sometimes we fail to admit it so. OSR however is a movement that aims to celebrate that... and remind everyone of that. It, however, encompasses much more than rolling dice uphill, punji sticks, and grimy realism; it is a living tradition that reflects continually on the fundamentals of tabletop role-playing. At the core of this venerable tradition are some classic modules whose design principles offer meta-lessons on adventure design, lessons that are still amazingly relevant to Game Masters of all kinds, regardless of the rules.

A Review of Vaesen â Call of Cthulhu meets The Witcher
Free League's Vaesen transports players to the fog of 19th-century Sweden, where old folktales are no longer merely stories but frightening realities. Based on the captivating work from Johan Egerkrans, the game depicts players as those with "the Sight"- the ability to see vaesen, the enigmatic creatures from Scandinavian folklore. These are not silly fairies; they are sentient beings growing increasingly aggravated and violent towards mankind.

Why I Love Sandbox Games â And Why You Might Like Them Too!
I have a particular style of campaign as a Game Master, that I am fond of, and I believe creates some of the most enjoyable experiences at the table: the sandbox. If you're used to playing campaigns more plot driven and linear then the idea of "sandbox" probably sounds a little... unstructured. But I assure you there is a lovely method to the madness and it may be exactly the refreshing angle your TTRPG group could benefit from.

Maybe You Should Try New Stuff
Itâs 23:02 and Iâve been mowing all day, too tired for an intro. Editor's note: I shall do the intro, for this piece by Horia is an extended feedback coupled with a couple of musings following Dice and Destiny Day! So yeah, here you go, an intro, I guess! The nice thing about cons is, they allow you to be as weird as you godsdamn want.

MĂśrk Borg is a doom-soaked, blasphemous RPG that spits in the face of traditional fantasy. With OSR-inspired rules and a world clawing through its own apocalypse, itâs as much art piece as it is game. Savage, stylish, and soaked in despair. The end is comingâand you wonât survive it. đ Link in bio!

A Review of MĂRK BORG: A Black Metal Album of a Game
MĂśrk Borg is a blasphemous sermon of a game, a curse written in blood and bile and screamed through the throat of a world that should have ended already. Created by Pelle Nilsson (Ockult Ărtmästare Games) and Johan Nohr (Stockholm Kartell), this Swedish-made RPG is a gauntlet thrown in the face of traditional fantasy. It is savage, stripped-down, and soaked in the aesthetics of black metal album art, medieval woodcuts, and avant-garde graphic design.

The Psychology of Fun: What Makes a TTRPG Engaging and Enjoyable?
Our event, Dice and Destiny came and went and we will have a billingual info post later this week detailing our experience and that of our local community, but for now we get back to the writing room and write articles. This one was done with the help and support of my wonderful gf and partner in crime, Yuno, since afterall, I am dabbling in her domain - psychology.

For me, this is why TTRPGs are so special:
In a rapidly digitized world, where so much life is spent interacting with screens, there remains strong appeal in sitting around a table with friends, rolling the dice, to participate together in the co-creation of a tale. Tabletop Role-Playing Games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and many others, represent more than an escape mechanism into worlds of fantasy; they represent a unique and potent method of building genuine human connection and cooperation within a highly social, face-to-face setting.

Probably my favorite Forged in the dark game: A Review of The Last Caravan
Ted Bushman's Last Caravan is a rich combination of post-apocalyptic grittiness and emotional depth. It's set in a North America following a brief but devastating alien war, not even a year after a two-month conflict that doesn't appear to have any victor. As alien presences linger and otherworldly threats emerge, they are driving a road trip along ice-coated roads westward in search of refuge: the aforementioned Republic of Saint Francis.

Beyond the Quest Marker: What Skyrim and Oblivion Can Teach Us About Worldbuilding &Â Exploration
The Remaster for TES IV: Oblivion took the world by storm and while I still haven't got the chance to jump into it as of yet, seeing that game brought over me a wave of nostalgia. The Elder Scrolls series, particularly the massive open worlds of Skyrim and Oblivion, has captivated millions. For me it was actually a big part of the reason I later got into D&D and TTRPGs as a whole as it provided the first fantasy world I got myself comepletly lost into and enamored by.

Beyond Hit Points: Crafting Memorable Combat
Combat. The blinding clash of steel, the pop and crackle of magic, the struggle for life. In tabletop role-playing games, it's generally where character and circumstance intersect, making memories that last an eternity. Combat, though, can sadly devolve sometimes be but a dry fist-bouncing, a game of tactics without the storytelling weight it needs to have. This article delves into system-agnostic techniques for making your combat battles more engaging, transforming them from mere rolls of the dice into vibrant, dynamic, and story-rich events that players will be remembering long after the last enemy has fallen.

A Review of: Cyberpunk RED â Sleek Chrome, Glitching Edges
Listen up, edge-runners. Five years ago, Cyberpunk RED arrived on the tabletop realm with a data-slug the size of a Militech C-RAM. It had to bear the ghost of Mike Pondsmith's legendary Cyberpunk 2020, reviving Night City's neon hellworld for a new generation of tabletop mercenaries, and riding the hype train chugging along in Cyberpunk 2077's wheel marks. No problem, huh?

Mechanics Are Vibes Too: How Rules Shape the Feel of Your TTRPG
This interesting question is one that was asked as a thoughtful comment following my article on "high-brow" tabletop roleplaying games like Bluebeard's Bride and Dog Eat Dog. The commenter asked, plausibly, "Why on earth do you even need mechanical support for themes like colonialism? Can't the players just roleplay it?" The query strikes at the heart of the question of what it is about TTRPGs that makes them so wonderful as a medium for story and group experience.

Blades in the Dungeons: Mechanics to Steal from Blades in the Dark for Your D&DÂ Campaign
Iâve long said that folks should try playing more TTRPGs outside of Dungeons & Dragons. This isn't because D&D is inherently lacking, but because there's a whole universe of fascinating design out there, offering incredibly unique tools for storytelling, player collaboration, and fostering genuine agency within the game world. But I do recognize the practical issue: getting your gaming group to leave the comfort zone they so enjoy for 5e is not always going to be simple.

The World is a Bastard: Embracing the Harsh Worlds of OSRÂ Games
Let me skip the pleasantries and jump straight into it by telling you one the primary reasons I love OSR games: so, you've heard of these OSR games, full of all these monsters and where the world's got teeth and isn't afraid to bite. The central conceit, the one that gets people nodding wildly or edging away slowly, is that the world of the game is, bluntly, a bastard.

Why One Page Systems are awesome and a quick review of my top 3Â favorites
Tabletop RPGs don't have to come in the form of rulebooks the size of bricks or 400-page books of lore. Sometimes, all you need is one sheet of paper, some dice, and a group of eager players willing to have fun. One-page RPGs have carved out a niche in the gaming world, offering big experiences in little packages. Regardless of whether you must introduce new players, fill in a session gap, or you just want to do something really completely different, one-page RPGs are a perfect solution.
