another consequence of my "start from whatever the picture needs > what i'd like to draw" approach is that it often takes me 40 to 80 hours of working on something and thinking "why isn't this more fun" before i remember that some things are, in fact, tedious and not fun to draw (who knew)

had to skip personal time (and rest) for a few weeks in a row again, and it really erodes my well-being, so insisting on a few hours on personal work today before anything else (and a few hours of nothing at all). starting with easily the most difficult panel i ever had to draw

it's finally out! cancel everything you were doing today

whenever i do flats, i use colors i would never use in the final, so every picture invariably starts off looking like some version of 'original joker meets the incredible hulk'

the territory where something stops being a drawing, but it's not yet a painting either, remains the best recipe for frustration. somehow i keep forgetting that as soon as the lines disappear, i get very unhappy

my life would be so much easier if i could just make pictures out of things i know how to do, instead of starting each one from the usual "i don't know how to do this but the picture obviously needs it, so i better figure out how to learn to do it in the next two to eight hours"

today's has been a good reminder that most of the time "the process" comes down to 1. draw the people/characters well 2. everything else

another recent book as evidence of comics getting to places they never reached before was @emmartian.bsky.social's Anzuelo--what other time was there when you could run into a 300-page object like this (other than when you dream you are in a bookstore and you find some books you didn't know existed)

i step away for two days and miss crucial world events like the new 1000-proof Artyom sequel to first knife! there should be resources of entire country-states available to allow them to make as many of these as they want. movies do have that and still can't compete with even one page of these books

"one quick round before bed" always leads to this kind of situation

sometimes you know right away that you won't be able to draw a particular bit any better in the final picture

after painstakingly drawing every bit of this picture, finally on to the next step: deleting three quarters of it

i can't believe i'm this tired after only drawing a structurally plausible-looking collapsed building from scratch and mentally adding several decades of weathering and erosion to it while i did it
