No, not some fab Arts & Crafts design -- it's Pieter Boel, working at Versailles in around 1670. Gorgeous!

Japanese fireman uniform, c. 1900 Japanese firemen’s jackets of the Edo and Meiji periods often have boldly dye-patterned linings like this one. The heavy quilted jackets, worn wet, provided protection for the firefighters, any supernatural images on the linings were meant to add to his safety.

Can a porcupine be appealing? Pieter Boel, painting animals in Louis XIV's zoo at Versailles, clearly thought so.
