The global steel decarbonisation journey is currently in a tough spot. Coal-based ironmaking continues to generate the bulk of industry emissions, while the scarcity of renewable energy and #GreenHydrogen is impeding the best developed alternative to date, namely green hydrogen-based ironmaking.

The steel industry claims metallurgical coal (or met coal) is “special” 🙄 But met coal is coal, pure and simple, with climate impacts that match or exceed thermal coal.

🚨The steel industry MUST exit coal Getting on the path to limit global warming to 1.5C means the steel industry must transition from coal-based steel making by replacing blast furnaces with green hydrogen-based direct iron reduction (H2-DRI) that can save nearly 2 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel 🤯

🚨Steelmaking drives climate change. Around 70% of global steel production relies on coal-based blast furnace ironmaking. This accounts for the lion’s share of steel-related emissions. It’s a problem we CAN’T ignore and don’t need to accept.
