New season, new programme ✅ Yesterday we premiered our newest programme, “The English in Europe” – a collection of works exploring the cross-fertilisation of musical ideas in 15th and 16th-century Europe. It was our first time in Thornbury, a pretty town outside of Bristol.

Ireland's 'Greater love hath no man' was commissioned in 1912 for Charles Macpherson, and rapidly gained currency in cathedrals and church choirs. With the outbreak of war in 1914, its text gained a special resonance as the casualties from the front mounted.

Stravinsky's 'Divertimento' is a twenty-minute orchestral suite fashioned from his 1928 ballet, 'The Fairy’s Kiss'. Here, Anthony Marwood and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra demonstrate mesmerising technique in the work's fourth movement, 'Pas de deux' 🧚

In 2012, Pavel Kolesnikov became a sensation at the Honens International Piano Competition taking home the world's largest piano prize. Here he is four years later performing the descriptively headed third movement of Schumann's 'Fantasie in C', with its instruction to "keep quiet throughout" 🤫

"My dad wrote a "swan" for me, because I was learning the piano part to Saint-Saëns's "The Swan". And, later on, when I was a bit older, I decided to compose one to return the favour, for him. And they're the ones that we've recorded on this album."—Leif Kaner-Lidström

'Circumdederunt me' is probably one of the earliest surviving works by Morales, and here it forms the first single from De Profundis's second instalment in their 12-album survey of the complete Morales Masses and Magnificats, this time with Eamonn Dougan at the helm.

This lyrical Prelude in F minor, BWV857, is written in the style of an allemande and comes at the mid-point in Book 1 of Bach's Well-tempered Clavier.

It took Frank Bridge four years to complete the Cello Sonata in D minor to his satisfaction, and it received its first performance at London's Wigmore Hall in 1917. Here, Natalie Clein performs with Yeol Eum Son to give the work its well-deserved centennial (+1) in the same venue, 101 years later 🥳
