Christian parenting books often talk about God’s design for male headship, the “priestly” role of fathers, etc. When fathers are god-like authorities in the home,Wives & children become subjects in the kingdom, there to meet the needs of the father.

We came across many Christian parenting resources that present children in dehumanizing ways: arrows, ammunition, evidence of parental goodness. Children are accessories in family vlogs, pawns in political battles, and when they are having a hard time, they are “vipers in diapers.” 1/2

Rillera attacks the axis of the scriptural understanding of the Jewish sacrificial system and shows how penal substitutionary atonement theology misunderstands the categories and purposes of sacrifices and atonement themselves, as laid out in Leviticus and interpreted by the apostles in the NT.

After listening to this podcast, I really want to read Rillera's book Lamb of the Free. Not sure I can summarize for those who don't want to spend 90 minutes on a podcast or aren't Christian theology geeks, but this topic has far-reaching consequences for our society, including the current crisis.

Popular Christian parenting resources often present parenting as task-oriented, the idea being that if parents do it right, they can achieve certain results. This myth displaces a view of children as individual human beings, something that has long term consequences.
