Have you ever noticed that ‘what’ rhymes with ‘lot’ but not with ‘that’? Likewise, ‘car’ doesn’t rhyme with ‘war’, and neither do ‘trash’ and ‘wash’, ‘catch’ and ‘watch’, and ‘camp’ and ‘swamp’. Why is that? It’s all because of the /w/ sound. Zoom in on my new graphic to learn more: 1/

Eggs are oval. The word ‘egg’ is even etymologically related to ‘oval’. ‘Oval’ comes from Latin ‘ōvālis’ (egg-shaped), a derivative of ‘ōvum’ (egg). ‘Ōvum’, in turn, was a distant cousin of Germanic *ajjan, the ancestor of Old Norse ‘egg’, which English borrowed. Click the graphic to learn more:

The participial suffix and often the plural marker is -an in tamajeq and Zenaga but -ən in tetserret . Tetserret vowels are very odd

Chariots seem to have had great importance for Saharan populations as their representations are found from the central Sahara to the Atlantic Sahara. But there is no clear evidence suggesting a military use of these chariots as it was in Egypt and middle East .

Chariots in the Sahara predate the camel period, the Tifinagh script and the classical period of Garamantes . The most recent chariots could be contemporary with the oldest Tifinagh inscriptions .

When you hear "Sahara" you might think of camels. But did you know that the peoples of the Sahara used chariots before they knew the camel ? Here is a map showing the distribution of chariots representation in the Sahara .

When tamajeq has a passive with the prefix m- in tetserret it's tt- ot tš- - immətkal = ittəššok (to be taken) - immətša = ittətša ( to be eaten ) - immokar = itšakar (to be stolen)

Someone on Reddit asked me what the difference between "Quranic Arabic" and "Classical Arabic" is. It was fun to put my thoughts together on this (and the vexed question of what "Classical Arabic" even means. Perhaps others will find this of interest too.

Another example of this change tt > št is the pronoun "nši" which is cognate with "nettat" in the northern Amazigh and which probably comes from *nšit or *ntšit

What was the alphabet originally for? When I began studying it, our oldest data appeared in the Egyptian desert around 1900 BCE so we guessed it was invented there 100 years earlier. Having found possibly alphabetic signs from Syria around 2400 we now guess it was invented *there* 100 years earlier.
