Don't mind me, I'm just bitter Harvard rejected me, of course -- but it is irritating that the universities prioritize ensuring that their grads find tenured jobs over producing as much excellent science as they can. I didn't know that the goal of the academic vocation was to preserve it...

In general the American PhD will continue to make the best minds, but I think this owes itself less to the system (though the systematic education is good) than to the amount of funding and the amount of time, almost a decade to write a book. Europeans don't have that, thank god.

On the other hand -- with all love to my European colleagues -- the American system invests way too much money on each student. PhD students who are good at taking coursework are not necessarily good writers, and the endgame of the PhD should always be the PhD. There's definitely a mismatch.

Another thing is that I've really warmed up to the Assistant Professor system in the United States (as opposed to the European/German professor-chair system). It's more collegial, there hierarchy is less severe, professors don't hoard their research team to themselves.

I think one of the biggest strengths of Americans is how we just accept other people profaning our language with their subjectively terrible pronunciation and grammatical use, I think Frenchmen might get an aneurysm from how Americans just let their language get defaced like this...
