It's curious, the details in a photo that emerge are often surprising. The fingers on their left hand look strange, and the dog-with-log seems to be missing a leg. The wonders of a 1/20s exposure!.

In France, Christmas is mostly celebrated on the 24th or le Réveillon. Yesterday, we were five for dinner. We ate a delicious meal and drank and laughed a lot.

This morning, I took this picture with my new Laowa 12mm autofocus. I gestured to these Chinese tourists that I wanted to take a group picture. They happily obliged. I'm trying out the Laowa 12mm as a street lens. Keep people in the middle you get loads of background info. #A7iv #laowa12mm

Picton Street Fayre, Bristol Took this with my Laowa 12mm. I recently had an exchange with someone on my timeline about autofocus. He said that with a 12mm the depth of field is such that autofocus is redundant. I disagree. If a subject comes close, the background goes soft. Not so here, though

I'm in England for a week to see family. Today, my brother gave me the Leica that belonged to our dad. It has a 50mm f/2 lens. He bought it in 1937. I knew it was in the family and have often thought about it. Now, it's with me... Me Leica!

My favourite moment from the Cecil Beaton exhibition. A small boy in a pink jacket touches a photo of a glamorous woman in a pink frock. A gallery guard was on hand to swiftly intervene with, "You can't touch that, sir!" Priceless!

Soho in 2025 has changed much since I was an assistant editor in a post-production company back in 1982. Some places never change, like Bar Italia and Maison Bertaux. Also, the Chinese restaurants on Gerrard Street (Chinatown). Prowler - "Are you naughty... or nice?" - is new to me.

Golders Green Station with my Laowa 12mm. Shutter speed of 1/5s is fun. It's not #icm yet blurs some bits and leaves others clean. Also, I'm playing with Photoscape X which has a free version that produced this mess.

A selection of pictures taken with my new Laowa 12mm. Frankly, this is a very hard lens to work with, as it exaggerates whatever is nearby. Duh! Through the window of a guitar shop, the statue of George Peabody, the Queen Anne statue in front of St Paul's and a diaphanous bus to Golders Green.

I just received this superwide lens. It's a Laowa 12mm f/2.8, which has three things I like, because it: 1) is full frame 2) is not a fisheye 3) has Autofocus 4) didn't cost me an arm and a leg OK, that's four... #photography #lensporn

A recent visit to the Grand Palais in Paris to see an exhibition of works by Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Pontus Hulten. As always, I like seeing how people react to the works they are seeing, as they so often rhyme. De Saint Phalle's universe is extraordinary.

AN #icm taken in the chapel at the Chaumont-sur-Loire château using a 6-second exposure.

In Notre-Dame Cathedral, I was drawn to the votive candles not just as a source of light but as an opportunity to photograph people. This picture is an #icm in order to disguise the faces of those during an intimate moment. I hope this works.

This pic tries to capture the central heart of Notre-Dame, the crossing, looking toward the choir and apse. I wanted to catch the chandeliers washing the pillars and stonework with warm light, while also revealing the stained-glass windows across the apse lit with cool daylight. #icm

This is a detail of Nicolas Coustou’s Pietà (1725) on the high altar of Notre-Dame Cathedral seen from behind. It seems to tell a different story than if seen from the Choir.

Tourists in Paris near Notre-Dame "Where are you guys from?" The question I didn't have time to ask. Any ideas?

Cité des Fleurs on Île de la Cité, Paris, I saw this woman with flowers the colour of the clothes she was wearing. I approached. She didn't speak French or English; I didn't speak Portuguese. She signed that it was OK for me to take her picture. My camera chose her flowers over her face. Obrigado!
