For unpaid carers, Mental Health Awareness Week isn’t a theme - it’s a daily battle. Chronic stress, burnout, isolation, financial strain. These aren’t “individual struggles”; they’re the result of a system that relies on carers while failing to support them.

Kinship care is when a child lives full-time or most of the time with a relative or close family friend, usually because their parents are not able to care for them. That’s about 121,000 children living in kinship care across England and Wales. More than 11,000 of those live in. Wales.

Sandwich carers are people who have caring responsibilities for both children and adults. That’s 86,000 people in Wales, providing unpaid care across the country.

In Wales in terms of unpaid carers gender 181,330 were female and 129,420 were male. This means that 58% of the caring population in Wales is female, up 1% from 2011. When women hit ages 55-59, one-fifth of women in Wales between 50 and 64 are caring for someone.
