Why are my tomato starts spindly? Peppers and dahlias are growing in the same conditions and look fine. The tomato leaves are not lush, and the lower ones curl and fall off :(

I get that the evil plan to destroy academia is to force more scientists into private industry to maximize profits, but industry needs academia too! So many startups are based on fundamental academic research and a foundation of open source research is good for everybody. Amazingly shortsighted.

Saving dahlia seeds for the first time! I've never done this before so I'm excited to see what I'll get. I collected dry flowers from 12 varieties. I wasn't around to do manual crosses so they're all open pollinated. Anybody know how often dahlias outcross vs self? Next year I'll do some crosses!

Here's a great idea for the NSF: let's say somebody has a PRFB fellowship, but they get a job and leave early. They should be able to use the remaining funds to pay themselves an hourly rate to finish any outstanding papers. Good for science, good for the fellow, and the money is already there 🌞🌈✨

I've been growing Dahlia imperialis (tree dahlia) for a few years now. I think this is the tallest growth yet, 13 feet! Short days trigger flowering, so it has never flowered before the killing frost here in Washington. A mild fall has it so close this year, we'll see!

I had a wild morning in Nebraska today. I had no idea it was Sandhill Crane season, but I happened to be driving along the Platte River right before sunrise and saw one of the most amazing bird sightings of my entire life, many thousands of cranes filling the sky 🥲 Nebraska is pretty cool.
