In 2021, MSNBC broadcast a new documentary, “In the Dark of the Valley,” about the the 1959 accident, the coverup, its effects on people living nearby, and the efforts of local citizens to hold Boeing and the state and federal governments accountable for failing to warn people or clean up the site.

Parents Against Santa Susana Field Laboratory, a local community organization, has worked hard for years on behalf of the 700,000 people living within 10 miles of the site to hold the US government, the State of California, and Boeing responsible for properly and fully cleaning it up.

Today in 1959, a clogged coolant channel led to the meltdown of 30 percent of the fuel elements in the core of the uncontained 20-Megawatt Sodium Reactor Experiment nuclear reactor at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles above Simi Valley.

NRC's “robust regulatory regime” claim is challenged by Beyond Nuclear v. NRC. Beyond Nuclear and Sierra Club, argue that NRC unlawfully made generic environmental conclusions despite alleged gaps involving aging-related risk, severe accidents, and climate-change effects.
