The program, launched in 2021 with a $3.1 million grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, was created to increase diversity in the district’s teaching staff. It offers up to $25,000 in student loan forgiveness over three years to new hires who identify as Black, Asian, Indigenous, Latino, or multiracial. The goal was to recruit more than 125 minority teachers within five years.The DOJ is reviewing whether this hiring incentive unfairly excludes certain teachers based on race. PPSD and the Rhode Island Department of Education have been notified of the investigation.
