I think the reason I like programming in Rust so much is it basically feels like familiar functional programming. With all the safety and cleverness but without any of the slowness of weird VMs some of them have.

Avoiding doing the difficult AI stuff for now and instead completed the code to assign territories. Need to do the territory connections now.

A few visual tweaks, but for now I'm going to work on the mechanics. In particular, enemy AI. I used a pretty simple algorithm before which naively scored possible moves to a specific depth. I need something more intelligent this time...

This is how I feel when I do amateur dramatics.

A few visual tweaks, and the start of the actual gameplay part. I had all of this working before, but re-implementing using ECS to solve the excessive use of Arc/Rc I had before.

I always get an ick when in films they say "President of the United States" all the time even in casual situations, why not just say president? I mean not like anybody says "Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" in stuff here.

Found a giant dead rat in the back yard. The cats eat the mice but won't touch a rat. Still doesn't beat the record breaker, which was a rat the size of a small dog. But then we no longer have our male cat and the ladies are a bit smaller than he was..

Initial labels in Garamond with proper full text shaping. Going to need some sort of container or drop shadow next I think.

I auditioned for a part in my drama group’s musical production of Jane Eyre and got a decent role - the foil to the main male lead. There is singing as it’s a musical. I have sung before but still…I prefer acting over singing!

A bit of nerd time tonight. I've looked to port over my previous demo (which was Skia in Rust) to #bevy. I'm using bevy-vello for the 2D rendering. Very early days, but looks nice, if a different aesthetic. I might not keep the realistic background. Scroll and pan works but I'll probably remove.

Why is it that nearly every TV show I watch ends up being dumb. Alien: Earth could have been so good. Why did they have to make it dumb?

Ahh, Mars. I don't get sad about much at all, but it is sad that the first humans on Mars is likely to be after I've been incinerated. As a kid I had such hope for humanity, the books I read told us we'd all be living in O'Neill cylinders by now.

I think I may have exhausted my interest in my current projects. Time for something new. Learned a tonne. I do fancy doing some application dev again, which has always been my favourite thing! I can’t be the only person who thinks writing a word processor sounds extra exciting 😃

Doesn't look different, but a decent rewrite has prepared me for the next stage, which is the map itself stays central, but when zoomed/panned the grid lines alter etc. Need to add position labels to the grid ticks... Think Powermonger or Zarch :-)

You know you're beyond 50 when you periodically check the balances in your pensions and frown about the enormous amount of money needed for a decent retirement. Biggest issue is I don't know when I'm gonna cark it. If I slide the slider to 80 all is good but if I live to 100 I'm screwed!

I have a Pi400 and I used it so much I broke the SD card connector. I don't really like mechanical keyboards that much but the keyboard on the 400 (and 500 I presume) was kinda bad, so this is a nice improvement. Although I find mechanical keyboards tiring to use for typing...

One of our trees has a decent amount of crab apples this year. One year I’m going to make spiced chutney. For sure. Definitely.

Added trees to give a sense of scale, each square is 650x650m. Yes, this runs slowly! I think this might be the end of this experimentation. Mars is huge, way too big to practically render :-)

As an alternative to my voxelspace demo, here is using regular triangles. The scale is an interesting problem! The ship can be pitched, rolled etc. and accelerates up to 1000s of metres per second, but a planet is huge...this demo area is 600x600km. Oh, and full physics with Avian. #bevy #rust

It’s either Rust or Java depending on what I’m trying to get done. But hard to ignore the pull of Haskell.

Went hiking, got soaked.

Who doesn't love classic #voxelspace? My algorithm is a bit rough so far but is smooth and it runs 100% on the GPU as a shader. All done in #bevy. The height map is 32768x16384, which is NOWHERE NEAR enough to model the whole of Mars, hence the granularity. No messing with meshes/triangles tho!

Thought the boycott might be because of the god damn awful crap that Disney has been making in the last few years (except Andor). But no, it’s just more US melodrama. Nothing to see here.

So I’m now blocking anybody who talks about only politics. Oh and those who use mm/dd/yyyy dates because it’s annoying and unnecessary. Nearly as bad as though who say “degrees” without specifying which type of degree 😀

My wife’s birthday party tonight, so this room is going to get some use later so enjoying the quiet for now… My favourite room and we only seem to use it in the colder months. No TV and phones (yes I have to get rid of mine now too!!).

I'm going to heavily work the zoomed in view because I don't have enough detail to make it look sharp (and I need to zoom in much further than this). But does look cool! #bevy #rust

Watched the latest Alien: Earth episode last night and I'm reminded once again that the "Alien" is not scary at all, looks like a person in a silly suit. But the other aliens are...pure nightmare fuel.

If I want news, I can read the news... I want to know about you and what you are up to, far more interesting.

Totally forgot I have labels... BTW, all this runs at 120fps which is pretty impressive I think for 4GB of planet data rendered, but obviously not all at once... #rust #bevy
