Clearcutting doesn't mimic fire when it comes to biodiversity conservation - in the early stages of forest development at least. Congrats to Graham Frank on the publication of his PhD chapter!

π¨ New paper, led by Cristina Barber. We used high-resolution aerial imagery to study tree mortality in a tropical landscape. Large, isolated trees were most likely to die--alarming finding!

Biodiversity change under human depopulation in Japan
Nature Sustainability, Published online: 12 June 2025; doi:10.1038/s41893-025-01578-wHuman population growth over the past few decades has had detrimental impacts on biodiversity; however, several countries, such as Japan, are experiencing below-replacement human fertility leading to depopulation. This study examines the impact of human depopulation on biodiversity levels across Japan.

A good opinion piece from the EiC of FEE:
esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
I find society-owned journals more rigorous, and more supportive to the scientific community. Whenever possible, let's give society journals more support as well
