I rarely (never?) talk about work on social media but I need to say it's been a busy busy slog all 2026. But that slog is coming to an end tomorrow and I think the relief this weekend is going to feel sooooo good. (Back to late night ppt)

I used to travel a ton when I was younger, like every free minute I had for a while in my 20s went to seeing the world. But it's been a while, and this was my first international holiday since pre-covid days. I remember why I liked it so much. Nothing better than experiencing the world first hand.

I decided I wanted to leave the US after the 03 Iraq invasion and actually did it after the 04 re-election of Shrub (literally quit my job in November 04). Part of me hoped that the US would wake up and reflect but as time goes on... Pretty clear that's not happening.

As you read the news today, watch who phrases the news as an "illegal invasion and regime change" versus "bringing democracy". It'll tell you everything you need to know about the news source you're reading, and frankly should decide whether you ever read them seriously again.

Man I am a board certified night owl but even I am shocked at how late people eat here. I left the restaurant I was at at 11pm and there were families heading in for dinner. On a weeknight

I feel like I should head out into the desert at night and try to get a super starry sky but probably too much light pollution. Night cityscapes will have to do

Heard some Christmas song that sounded like Thom Yorke. Wasn't, but for a minute I was wondering why I was hearing Radiohead Christmas songs in an Oman cafe

I didn't expect how much Christmas music, decorations, and promotions I am seeing in conservative middle eastern countries.

I love how when I finally go on an actual vacation my old tendency to have no common sense whatsoever instantly came flooding back Yesterday I was sitting in a gas station parking lot checking my map, 2 ladies and a dude came up to my window and offered me a free drink - fruit juice or a smoothie

There's huge sand dunes in the middle of the city, and people just smash 4WDs up them to watch the sunset. Very cool

When I told the front desk clerk at the hotel I lived in Japan he was like "oh my dream is to visit! I love cars, I want an old school Supra". Totally get it. I almost bought one back in the day and still regret not doing it.

Arriving in a new country where you don't speak the language, doing it in the middle of the night, renting a car without a GPS to find a hotel you're not entirely sure where it is when your data network is being wonky is a great intro to a place 😅

I have a ton of proper specialty coffee shops bookmarked for the rest of my trip but have yet to find one in Bahrain. I mean there's %Arabica but going to the Middle East only to drink coffee at a Japanese chain is only marginally better than hitting a TGIFridays here

Of all the all the Texas food chains I would expect to find in Bahrain, Fuddruckers would be pretty much at the bottom of the list. (No I didn't go in)

I didn't have internet when I took this image so I couldn't translate it then. Looking it up with Google Lens now.... I wonder if the Arabic is as lovely as the translation?

Got a long trip planned for this week through the new year's holiday. Trying to decide how heavy I want to pack photo gear. Weight isn't a problem but I wonder about dragging a bunch of film through various airports.
