loading . . . Corrie Haffly on Instagram: "Our youngest son, Ben, has been diagnosed with B-cell leukemia. This is the most common and treatable form of leukemia in kids. He will be staying here at Kaiser Roseville for the next 3-ish weeks for treatment: Tomorrow, the initial surgery for his IV port and various biopsies; Monday, chemo starts. The next months will be very intense. We find out a month from now how well things are going when they get more bone marrow to compare. We are exhausted (especially Corrie, who has been with Ben since Thursday’s doctor visit, ER check-in, and eventual pediatrics admittance 18 hours later and has slept two nights in Ben’s room), but grateful. Every staff member and doctor and nurse that we’ve interacted with has been incredibly kind, patient, warm, and encouraging. We think things were caught early (no liver or spleen swelling), so we’re extra thankful for Ben’s mysterious painful swollen elbows and the school nurse that strongly encouraged us to go to the doctor, and for the medical pros that did their jobs to evaluate and test him. Through the annoying and sometimes painful pokes, extremely painful elbow joint tap, and umpteen times of explaining his medical history, Ben has been a brave, polite, funny, and cooperative trooper, and we are beyond grateful to bear witness to his awesomeness. Inspired by our friends @laeyashelby @jjshelbs, we started a “God sighting” sheet and wrote some things down as a family when Steve brought the boys out today. Ben’s brothers are extremely grateful that he’s canceled our family backpacking trip; Ben was happy to be here to catch the bimonthly pediatric floor nerf war! There are still lots of things to figure out as a family and as parents. Both of our employers are supportive, and even before learning his diagnosis, we’ve already had so many people reaching out with love, prayer, and offers of practical help. For now, @do_good_shop (Jenni) is compiling lists of contacts for us and will be helping to organize All the Support - please reach out to her as we will funnel needs through her, but I’ll be on brand with posting social media statuses as well!
