A Canada lynx tripped the sensor on my camera trap in the Northwest Peak Roadless Area, MT, back on August 30. I didn't get any good photos of the lynx with its head up, but this image shows how large those back legs are.

There have been large flocks of red crossbills this June at home, Yaak Valley, MT. The odd shape of their bills allows them to break into unopened conifer cones. The crossed tips of the bill push the scale in a cone up, exposing the seed inside, a unique adaptation for living in conifer forests.
