Dr Alan Hastie and his PhD students Lindsay and Alex were working long hours on our 7f last week. They analysed B, Cl, trace elements and REE in tiny experimental glasses to learn about the formation of early continental crust. Now they’re off to Cyprus for an exciting field trip! ☀️🏄‍♀️

A big thank you to Flore who has been completing most of the 1300-HR analytical tests. 🎉 It was nice having you here! We're now entering the final phase of instrument commissioning and training.

Dr Nicola Allison (@uniofstandrews.bsky.social) is making us dream of a tropical getaway with her Hawaiian coral samples 🌴🌊🪸. She’s measuring B isotopes to infer seawater pH and learn about CO2 exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere.

Successful first session of 2026 on our 7f with Katie Schofield from Durham University @durhamearthsci.bsky.social. She’s analysing volatile elements in apatite for her volcanology PhD project with Prof. Humphreys. Our 1300HR is ready for the analytical tests!

Installation milestone reached! Our new 1300HR was turned on today for the first time. Meanwhile our guest Dr Joshua Shea from Cambridge is busy with the 7f, measuring trace element partitioning in olivine.

It's our new IMS 1300-HR!! It will be ready for exciting new science projects in spring 2026 - the best time to visit Edinburgh.

Several mysterious boxes arrived at the Ionprobe lab. Can we open them now or do we have to wait for Christmas?

This week we had our first user in the Edinburgh Ion Microprobe Facility after the summer shutdown for doing some remedial work in the labs. It feels so nice to be back 🙂
