Excited to share my first paper (w/ Michael Ben-Or)! Quantum repeater protocols must decide when to perform entanglement-distillation - but should that decision be local or global? We find that global policies can make or break secure communication. 🔑 1/8

Just published a Stim implementation of the [[16,4,4]] Tesseract code - the one used in Microsoft+Quantinnum's QECC experiment last year. Simulation can be used to quickly benchmark the code under various parameters. Contributions are welcome.

Is there anything more suspenseful than running a simulation when you don’t even know if the code you wrote is correct?

I didn't say it was measurement back-action. It wasn't measurement back-action. XXXX and ZZZZ do commute.

I’ve created an interactive simulation of the Quantum Entanglement Distillation process. Entanglement distillation (or purification) is a central operation in quantum communication. Two parties generate many noisy EPR pairs, and then transform them...

At the end of a fellow quantum student’s wedding, we formed a circle around the bride and groom, swinging from side to side, out of sync. All I could think of was how appropriate it was that we were simulating the 1d Ising model.

I found some (minor) inconsistency in a 20+ year old paper by a prominent researcher. He agreed that there’s an issue, but since the paper is old and the issue is minor - I don’t expect him to correct it. It would’ve been cool if I could just open a pull request and fix it myself, like on Github..

Do “Ghiblified” images have enough information to recreate the original photos (faces in particular) they were derived from? I saw a claim saying Ghiblifying an image is a good way to share a scene without exposing your face. I am not sure its correct, though.

In Hebrew, an ion trap is spelled exactly as pigeon trap. Therefore, googling ״מלכודת יונים״ (Mal-ko-det Yo-nim) gives the following amazing result (this is not edited in any way).

Some kid at the playground: what is sweet is healthy and what is healthy is unhealthy. Me: uh? Is today opposite-day? Kid: yes. Me: got it. So today it not opposite-day. Kid: ? Me: today is opposite day, so today is not opposite day. Kid: 🤯

My 7yo asked what my thesis is about. How do you explain quantum repeater protocols to a 7yo? I said it was kinda like a triple-jump game: Where there are 3 sticks and you have to jump across the next one every time. Now, I told him to imagine there are many more sticks >

Some cryptographic thoughts on breaking 4-digit locks (e.g for lockers) Assuming most people scramble their code after locking to make sure each digit is scrambled, i.e not the code digit. This gives attackers information on the code if they observe multiple scrambles (not a lot!). On the other hand

One cool thing about (classical) simulation of quantum systems, is that you sometimes have to ask yourself “am I allowed to know that?”. Kinda like developing a game with “fog of war”, where the computer opponent is unaware of some things even though the application “knows” the entire state.
