The UK did attend the conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels in Santa Marta at the end of April. UK Climate Envoy Rachel Kyte went, not Ed Milliband, but at least we were there. A start to a complex but urgently necessary process we must push along with our own energy transition.

We went to the Drax AGM to tell them to stop! Their wood pellet mills cause cancer and respiratory disease and devastate poor, black communities. The UK subsidises this. And those tax subsidies mean that Drax’s power station will remains the largest UK carbon emitter until at least 2030.

Driving the message home outside NatWest’s AGM on Tuesday, alongside truth telling inside (watch our video of that). Without banks lending money to finance projects that cause global overheating, they would not go ahead. It’s time for financial institutions to stop funding death and destruction.

NatWest has backtracked on its oil and gas policy, opening the door to financing more fossil fuel expansion. No responsible bank should be backtracking in this way, because we have such a short window to avoid the worst possible outcomes of the climate crisis.

CCA Scotland joined North Sea Knitters in Edinburgh today to explain why Rosebank must be stopped. The Knitters ‘thin red line’ represents the critical threshold of 1.5C. Burning Rosebank’s oil and gas would contribute over 200 million tonnes of globally warming CO2 emissions. #stoprosebank

The new WMO State of the Climate report highlights the vulnerability of our inter-connected economies and the risk to our social stability. Our addiction to fossil fuels is destabilizing both the climate and global security. It won’t get better unless we demand that our governments do something.

CCA greeted new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, on her pilgrimage to her installation. Beautiful that our Rev Sue Parfitt, one of the first women to be ordained priest in the CofE asked the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury for a blessing for CCA’s work, and gave her a blessing in turn.

In our inbox, a reminder that St Cuthbert changed the law to protect nature. He had the authority to do this as a bishop, and he used it. Also that people met and prayed that the Berlin Wall would come down, and this should give us hope that Christians can bring about change by working together.
