When I worked in newsrooms, I found it frustrating that tracking projects that newsroom devs like me tended to work on were hard to promote. Social networks downranked repeated links. Newsroom CMSes are designed for newness above all. Editorial processes were built around these constraints.

I made hex.camp "communities" for Victoria (vichex.ca) and Vancouver (vanhex.ca) ... but I didn't have anything for the rest of Vancouver Island or the gulf islands, so I recently set up islandhex.ca ... no content there yet, but now I can create websites geographically rooted in that region.

I had a great time at #dwebcampcascadia … so many good conversations!

Update The City of Victoria will no longer use X/Twitter as of 12 August 2025. Following a motion from Councillor Thompson, the city moved away from X, and now uses this one and Threads for weather alerts, updates, and emergency comms. VicAlert remains preferred source for emerg communications.
