Girl-next-door or Terminator? Will Tilly Norwood really lay waste to the acting profession?

Thoroughly Modern Tilly
Will AI be the end of the acting profession? The latest hopeful starlet hit the news last week: a young unknown called Tilly Norwood. Unknown because, up until a few months ago, she didnāt exist. As you may have heard, Tilly is AI generated. Reportedly, Hollywood agents are vying to represent her, and her human counterparts are decrying her. Does this mean that the future foretold by the 2002 movie…

Movies of theĀ Motherland
The Dangerous Power of Patriotic Cinema ā After a family holiday in Country Cork, Ireland, home of Michael Collins, hero of Irish independence, I became curious to know more about him. I decided to take the easy route and watch the movie, the 1996 Neil Jordan biopic. The film seems to be something of a touchstone for the people of Ireland ā it was even granted a PG certificate, despite the swearing and violence; itās deemed to be so culturally important that the Irish government is keen that all Irish kids see it.

Screen. Play.
Report from The London Screenwriters Festival 2025 Iād not been to the London Screenwritersā Festival for some years, maybe not since 2017. As you might expect, itās changed. The venue is the sameāRegent University, neatly hidden in Londonās Regentās Parkābut the tone is different, or perhaps just more noticeable. Itās fun. Whether it's a festival or a film set, the tone filters down from the top, and presiding over the Screenwritersā Festival is one of the most distinctive personalities of the British indy scene: …

Tales from the Cutting Room Floor asks what are awards really for?
loading . . .
Raise the RedĀ Carpet
Are Movie Awards Nonsense? The Golden Globes and the BAFTAs are in the rear-view mirror, the Oscars lie ahead ā awards season is upon us, and you know what that means⦠Do you know what that means? Iām not sure I know what it means and I vote on awards. The Oscars may be the most high profile trade junket on the planet, watched by nearly 20 million Americans and millions more worldwide, but arenāt all these ceremonies just a festival of self-congratulation?

A want to take a moment to big up the film 'Speak No Evil' (2024). I've not seen the Danish original , but the US/UK remake has an incredibly taut script. James McAvoy owns the film, but Scoot McNairy and Macenzie Davis (both of 'Halt and Catch Fire') are excellent too.

Just learned two wonderfully obscure storytelling words: Deuteragonist - the second most important character in a drama. Contagonist - a secondary antagonist.
